.hack//G.U. TRILOGY

What can I say? The cellshaded, video game-like animation in this movie was awesome. Along with the superb direction of fighting choreography, the action in this movie was absolutely kickass. To tell the truth, if it was just another run-of-the-mill, hand-drawn, and digitally colored anime movie by Bee Train, I wouldn’t have payed attention to the action as much as I would’ve payed attention to the can of coke I was drinking to pass the time, thinking: “When the hell is this shit going to be over?” The anime portion of the .hack franchise has always took a nice direction in character development, but certainly not the action (count on the games to take care of that). This movie was a great balance of both, and it was really like watching a video game. Great graphics, good eye-candy.

Unfortunately, watching a video game and playing a video game are two totally different things. When taking the G.U. games into account… I honestly don’t know if I should really recommend this movie to anyone.

Haseo is constipated
SKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEITH!!! KOTAIRO, TRIIIII-EDGEEEE!!! *insert epic explosion* *plop* … Shit.

I wouldn’t suggest that this is a good substitution instead of playing the games, nor do I suggest that you would sit in awe, watching this movie after playing the games.

Hours of gameplay crammed into a film that’s about an hour long, leaves a lot of details to be missed. One of the f***ed up things about this movie is that Azure Kite was taken down too easily, and we never actually get to know his true purpose in The World due to Haseo killing him off in this strange, alternate interpretation of G.U. Even the beautifully executed AIDA-infected Atoli-classroom scene couldn’t make up for all the characters and events omitted in this movie.

Atoli gave me nightmares last nightN-n-…nightmares…

Given a choice? Play the games, watch the movie after. If you don’t have a choice (don’t have a PS2, can’t afford all three games, etc.), I guess you… don’t have a choice – unfortunately. Of course, this really isn’t a bad movie. It has nice action, and a good story… but it really is just a chopped-up story for those who don’t have the time to follow the games and want a follow-up to .hack//ROOTS.

HOLY ****

  1. Not that I care for the franchise, but thought I should give you a head’s up: Bandai has licensed this, and has a trailer of it currently on their website.
Watching it reminds me of how cool it would be to have a well-made animated Zelda movie… or well-done animated series. Either works. I like the mythos behind that franchise and given the right talent, one could make a compelling adaption/original story out of it.

  2. @HellKorn: Hm, thanks for that. Haven’t been paying that much attention to this franchise since I last heard about this movie.

Yeah, a Legend of Zelda movie would be pretty awesome if handled right, unlike that old DIC cartoon that aired way back then. They could probably make good use of that as a good way to expand the universe the franchise takes place in. Of course, the cliché plot that’s [creatively] hidden in all of installments of the franchise might weigh the movie down, but I guess that wouldn’t be their fault (then again, being cliché isn’t always bad… since I do enjoy the series very much and the stories behind all the installments).

Creatively? It’s the freakin’ elephant in the room!

But they wouldn’t have to strictly adhere to the typical Zelda plot, though. Just draw heavily on the mythos and character backgrounds (hey, Ganon would become even more awesome) with a competent director/writer, and you have a winner.

Oh, and speaking of Ganon being awesome and cliched plots, the following comic sumarizes the plot of Wind Waker rather well, don’t you think?
