Catch up! Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai DES

Enitre budget spent on making the perfect waifu

The college quarter kept me away from this place so long that it almost became “Wahfuu! The Visual Novel Blog.” Yet, I’ve tried to keep up with anime somewhat.

I failed.

However, I have been keeping up with Chuu2Koi, at the very least (planning on having a marathon of Psycho-Pass and Little Busters! afterwords, though I’m afraid the latter might ruin the visual novel somewhat for me since I’ve been reading that instead). Funnily enough, the series is going the complete opposite direction of what was suggested by a couple of people (that it had the possibility of “deteriorating into love-triangle BULLSHIT”) and I’m LOVING it.

Her thighs are still delicious

She seemed too normal to be true.

It’s clear from the get-go that the token couple would be Yuuta and Rikka. Possible third wheel? Nibutani Shinka.

Which is thrown out the window the moment it’s revealed that she’s a closeted Chuunibyou herself not unlike Yuuta, and her ojou-san demeanor was all an act. Still a possible third wheel? Nope, she actually jumps onto the whole Yuuta/Rikka ship straight away the moment it’s made clear that the two should be an item.

HNNNNNNNNNG OMEGA DELTA SUPREME

HEART ATTACK STROKES BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS RISING

WHO ORDERED THE EYEPATCH PARFAIT?

Right after, in episode five, is when we dive straight into the beginning of a perpetual bout of HNNNNNNG.

Not just deepening the character relationship through the study session (and Yuuta getting to know Rikka and her home environment a bit better) – but her facial reaction to the “protocol exchange” at the end of the episode clearly indicates that something has blossomed here.

Burst reality into shreds!
Blast reality! Burst it into shreds!

One of the last things I expected when starting up this anime was to experience a massive amount of feels. I mean, c’mon, you can’t blame me for not thinking KyoAni is above producing an anime purely to showcase a bunch of cute girls doing crazy antics? Eyepatch, zettai ryouiki, and ahoge in all.

It’s been hinted that Rikka’s family life hasn’t been a happy one. Then episodes seven and eight really threw me for a loop with the full reveal of Rikka’s back story. The whole issue with her dead father and her not wanting to face reality was pretty sad, and I give the anime a pat on the back for how well-executed these episodes were. When it was a simple and lighthearted show, I thought it was enjoyable and the characters grew on me, especially Rikka. And when it decided to get a tad serious, the previous attachment to Rikka and being able to feel for her problems managed to grab my interest and superglue it onto the screen.

Kind of a dirty move, KyoAni, but I admit that it’s effective. Curse you!

INNOCENT AND TENDER AND CRAP :3

WHY CAN'T MY LIFE BE LIKE THIS?!

Hnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggghhhhhhhh

At the same time, the seeds of attraction latch onto Rikka and Yuuta as they bond even more.

YOU SEE THIS SHIRT? YEAH, THAT’S RIGHT. SMELLS LIKE YUUTA.

SMELLS LIKE YUUTA. ABSKSBJAVSAVHSCV

HETEROCHROMIA HNNNNNNNNG

Rikka moe – eyepatch moe = heterochromia moe

After a whole episode of Nibutani trying to push Rikka into confessing to Yuuta, helping her realize that the butteflies in her stomache isn’t some dark essence trying to corrupt her (it’s pretty damn cute)… we actually don’t get a confession just yet, but rather a passionate embrace after Yuuta saves Rikka from a near-death experience.

DAAAAAW

Romance? Without bullshit harem squabbles? IN MY MODERN ANIME?

HAAAAAAAAAAAH, yeah right.

I WILL HAVE A HEART ATTACK AND I WILL SURE KYOANI

“I love you, Yuuta”? I WAS GONNA SAY IT FIRST!

Oh.

The insert song played during this EXTREMELY adorable confession scene was really good and complemented it perfectly. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the title of the song is. It’s clearly sung by Zaq, but it’s probably made specially for the anime and hasn’t even been released yet. If anybody knows what the title of the song is, kindly inform me. Many cookies will be given to you!

ARRGHHH WHY CAN'T MY LIFE BE LIKE THISSSSS

Couples taking cosplay shots. Always awesome, I tell you.

Things get serious...

Naturally, things don’t stay sugary and sweet when Yuuta is forced to pull Rikka back into reality, after being confronted by Touka and finally meeting Rikka’s mother. Probably for her own good, as she has to stay with her mother for quite a while due to Touka’s job. But still, it must have been a pretty huge emotional blow for her. Especially since I figure that Rikka was looking forward to the ADHD performance with her boyfriend and the whole “take off your eyepatch’ thing being so sudden. Disappointment everywhere…

I feel as if dialogue between our two leads is gonna become a little awkward here… especially after that.

TO BE CONTINUED, DAMMIT

GOD DAMMIT, CLIFFHANGERS! Rikka sings her dad’s favorite song… and the golden contact len- er, Jaou Shingan is gone! Is she finally facing reality?! I want Chuuni 11, now, you stupid cliffhanger!

I must admit. I’ve been following this show pretty actively and have been loving the eccentric characters, Dekomori, Kumin, Isshiki, etc. But who am I kidding? Two episodes left now, and I will say this – Rikka made the show for me. While it’s great whenever the lead female of an anime turns out to be that likeable, I feel like the other characters didn’t get their time to shine. I’m not going to blame KyoAni on this because it’s obviously import from the source material, but RIKKA IS BASICALLY THE SHOW nonetheless, and if some evil soul magically does not like her (or Yuuta), then the whole thing falls apart. Despite that, to me, it’s been a pretty solid series so far, and if they end it on a fantastic note – I’ll be satisfied.

This is asking for a Junji Itou illustration

Dekomori… I wouldn’t be surprised if one day, that pretty head of hair is ripped straight off your head. LOL

  1. For the record, the song is called Kimi no Tonari wa by ZAQ. It’s not released though.

But yeah, the show is basically the Rikka show. I did think the whole eyepatch-armor was a bit predictable, but it helps make Rikka the thousand-dollar waifu she is.

Seriously. I immagine this series being pretty hit or miss but I haven’t moe’d out this hard in awhile.

  2. Thanks for that. Guess I was right that it was sung by Zaq after all.
As far as taste goes, it’s not something for everyone, but I’d say that this has been a solid series nonetheless. It isn’t so terribly bad that it deserves to be trashed but not jaw-droppingly amazing at the same time. For what it is, it definitely has an attractive production value being produced by KyoAni show, the ridiculous and dellusional characters are likeable if you aren’t easily annoyed, and the comedy bits are able to stand on their own. Helps that the series succeeded in not being anything I hoped it wouldn’t.
