Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san (Thoughts and Impressions)

Derpity derp

Another series to get out of the way before I write about the current anime season – friggin’ mermaids on an acid trip, twelve minutes each week.

There’s really only one way to describe this show, and that is: insane humor.

She's smoking hot

Let’s get down to business: this anime is purely a gag series. A very, very bizarre gag series that dives even further into the sea of bizarre with each passing episode. I mean, c’mon, it’s about a schoolboy being harassed by a bunch of ancient sea creatures and cryptids that walk around modern day Japan, while nobody really gives a shit.

It’s very hard to describe, because it’s exactly what makes this series so funny – it has its own style of humor and it works.

I guess the *best* way to describe the humor of this series is that it doesn’t hold itself back. It doesn’t seem to stick to being one type of gag series – in fact, it’s its own type of gag series – the jokes range from being jabs at history, to gags about myths, to plain overly sexual… everything is pretty random, in-your-face, and unexpected. Honestly, I enjoyed every minute of being entangled by the pure insanity of this show.

Don't ask, just roll with it

Weird is an understatement.

The animation is great for an anime with such a short running time for each episode. The art-style reminded me somewhat of a mix between my favorites from the 90s (mostly in terms of the eye design) and a twisted version of Lucky Star. Go figure. It certainly goes well with the insane humor the series goes for, and I like it.

The OP is catchy too.

Overall, I think this is a great anime to enjoy when you just want to sit back and have a good laugh. It’s hilarious, and definitely good for cool-down periods between the more serious stuff.
