This makes it the fourth time I’ve seen this shot
Okay, so I’m back to wrap up the Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works post I started ages ago.
Instead of squeezing in the VN’s original epilogue at the end of the previous episode, Ufotable did a great thing by producing an entire extra episode with new material depicting what happens after the original route, alongside the remaining source material. As a result, I think episode 25 in itself is worth watching for readers of the visual novel regardless if you think the rest of the show is a bad adaptation or not (I personally thought it was great, but it was certainly a bit shaky here and there).
It was great seeing Rin and Shirou grow up a bit. Although I miss the twintails, seeing Rin drop the tsundere attitude and being more honest about being a loving girl for Shirou overall makes come off as more mature, and it was neat seeing how tall Shirou got in such a short timeskip. He’s going to match Archer’s juggernaut height in no time.
This entire episode was just that: a fun closure to the characters. Good fun. It also made me feel like I want Ufotable to team up with Nasu to create a Magic School spin-off of Fate. Granted, such an idea wouldn’t be the same without Illya or Saber.
I honestly didn’t think I’d ever get to see Luvia animated by Ufotable until a Fate/Hollow Ataraxia adaptation became a thing, so it was a really great treat seeing her here.
I mean, she’s in the Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya anime, but I never liked how Silver Link drew the Fate characters’ eyes in comparison to the original manga by KALMIA. Although, speaking of which, at the time when I watched the episode, the Luvia scenes got me pretty hyped for 2wei herz!, which aired a few weeks after my birthday (Silver Link knows I’m an Illyafag? Hrm).
Thought it was all going to be fluff? Hah! Tohsaka and Luvia catfights are never fluff.
Imagine if their Prisma counterparts had catfights like this all the time. Jeez.
I’m still not sure if this is a Shiki cameo. If it is, what’s he doing at the Mage’s Association in London?
It was a neat touch having Shirou and Rin visit King Arthur’s actual real life grave in Glastonburg Abbey to pay respects to their fallen Saber… it makes me happy that her disappearing in the True End isn’t just an afterthought for them. I’ll just leave this here.
I know Sakura’s probably being a cheeky sister to [the supposedly reformed] Shinji here, but knowing what their abusive relationship is like in Heaven’s Feel gives me the impression that there’s some creepy context behind that smile, to be honest.
Yeah, eat that apple, you piece of shit niisan.
You’ll know what I mean when Heaven’s Feel gets animated…
This might have flew over Zero fanboy heads, but Lord El-Melloi II (who appears in Prisma too, fyi) is actually Waver in his thirties. Then again, most people probably would have found that out already before this slow-ass post. lol
Fun fact: You might not tell from the way he looks, but Iskander left such a big impression on him that apparently he’s now a giant vidya otaku.
EMIYA’s closing words are what made the VN UBW end pretty strongly for me, personally. They already (brilliantly) incorporated some of EMIYA’s “Answer” in his actual battle against young Shirou, but in terms of the anime, the remaining portion of his “personal conclusion” still wraps UBW’s end nicely as a narrative.
…but one difference is that the anime ends off with a shot of Shirou wandering the wastelands alone in EXTRA Archer’s desert outfit. It’s a pretty epic shot to end off with, but I don’t feel like I particularly enjoy the overall implications. What happened to Tohsaka? Word of God already makes it clear that UBW Shirou won’t become Archer EMIYA, but it feels like he’s going to have a rough life regardless, especially if the one hope Archer left off with (Rin) is gone from the picture.
I’m just going to avoid taking the literal scene at face value and assume that Shirou does end up going through similar path as Archer, but Rin’s still there to support him and prevent him from making any fatal mistakes, like forming a contract with Alaya. The hero EMIYA will come into existence, but the Counter Guardian EMIYA will never be born, at least in their world.

Alternate Ending (Sunny Day)
Oh boy, the threesome ending. Just think: had Ufotable decided to rack up on the Saber points, we would have gotten this instead of episode 25!
I’m not gonna lie. If Illya didn’t exist, Saber would be my favorite Fate girl with Rin running up there pretty close. Saber’s edge is well… just look at that screenie. Nigga das so kewt.
But similarly to how I feel about their VN counterparts… seven minutes worth of Saber fanservice isn’t remotely comparable to what we ended up getting as compensation for her disappearing. Ufotable going out of their way to animate the alternate ending for the BD kind of proves how it fares against the True End. But hey, maybe I’m not giving that thought a chance. It’s not like I’d mind Saber/Rin/Emiya hijinks in Fuyuki, I guess, and it’s not like they animated anything other than what was shown in the visual novel either. Ufotable spiced up the True Ending by showing us the actual London stuff.
Speaking of alternate endings, you know what would be cool? If Ufotable went out of their way to animate every single Bad End as omake after they’re done with Heaven’s Feel. I keep hearing about Shirou’s “plot armor” and whatnot, but people would be surprised at how many ways he can die over the course of the story just from making a slightly different decision. Hell, choosing to bail out of the Holy Grail War after Kotomine’s explanation gets him CRUSHED BY BERSERKER.
Fate route remake/Last Episode animated when
Meh route, great girl.
