Best daughter 2014 and forever

Best daughter 2014 and forever

Here’s another great episode from the first season. It was always a treat to see CLAMP delving into Sakura’s family life and bonds as a focal point in an episode/chapter. If I were to rank Cardaptor Sakura‘s first season episodes on a tier list, the episodes about her mother and grandfather would certainly be about the same as this one in terms of heartwarming.

Slow and steady

I swear, almost all of the school-related animations I’ve watched during my childhood always had at least one episode about running a marathon. And in those, someone always gets a leg injury leading to heartwarming help, etc.

Cardcaptor Sakura isn’t exempt from this. This was one of those episodes. 😛

The best clingy jealous girl

I wasn’t in the manga!

But that really doesn’t matter since she’s an awesome character anyway! (It’s been a long time, but I’m back to continue this. Blu-ray Hype A-Go!)

The thing I really love about the Cardcaptor Sakura anime is that CLAMP was directly involved with it. With other anime adaptations, whenever there is an anime-original character or anime-original ideas involved (Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!, both of the original Yuugiou anime adaptations, etc.), it really boggles the original content down because the original writers had no say whatsoever. It’s usually just the employees at the animation studio thinking their ideas are better marketing (or something) and end up shoving ideas into a pre-made story that just don’t belong.

Here, we have a character that fits in perfectly with the rest of the CLAMP multiverse. The manga’s structure is actually very different from the anime, which modified the manga’s storyline + added their own storyline elements in order to extend it into a longer five-cour anime. But as I’ve said in a previous CCS post, the anime completely emulates the same spirit as the original manga precisely because CLAMP was directly involved with it. NOTHING in the anime insults or devalues the ideas presented in the source material. And for the purposes of what the anime was going for in the end, Li Meilin fits in really well and has become an endearing character not only to the fans, but also to CLAMP themselves.

I declare this month “Happy Month”

Time to be magical

Because my birthday was like, two days ago, and the feel of attaining the most possible adult freedoms available in California is awesome (I’m 21 now? Yessir!), I declare this month “Happy Month” in which posts and rants about terrible or mediocre things is kept to a minimum in comparison to things that make me smile. Well, at least posts written by me will be happy this month. I rant about terrible things enough outside of the blog as it is, to the point where you could call me a weeb version of AVGN without a Motherfucking Mike holding me back. I was *this* close to ranting about anime/non-anime fans using certain terms un-ironically, but I’m gonna put that on hold for HAPPY MONTH.

Things that I plan on doing, considering my summer college schedule, is as follows: I’ll also be posting about Cardcaptor Sakura mostly (need to finish those lookback posts!). And then No Game No Life, which was actually pretty good for the most part (it reminded me of the Yuugiou manga). That will all happen once I post up my Kill la Kill final impressions (you must go through Meh Land before you get to Happy Paradise. It will the only time I’ll be sad, I promise).

(And it will keep me occupied until August, when my child arrives. The joys of becoming a father are coming, guys. ;_;)

Cardcaptor Sakura Blu-Ray Collection’s English dub

I used the Money card

NO. REGRETS.

So, I finally decided on which online retailer to pre-order my Cardcaptor Sakura Blu-Ray collection from: RightStuf. NISA had a nice poster, but I decided to forgo chipping away another 20 bucks on their pre-order deal, since I have a bunch of posters laying around in storage without frames to put them up.

I know I said I didn’t care about watching the English dub that will be included in this new set (again, no one is Sakura besides Sakura Tange, plebs), but I’m genuinely curious about it. At first I thought they were doing a redub, but then I remembered that it’s NISA. One of the companies that brings us Japanese anime in sweet, affordable ways – and English dubs are expensive. Reading the description, the English dub track is described as a monaural track. See, if they were really redubbing the series, the audio wouldn’t be so outdated, indicating that the dub that will be included on the set already exists.

The first thought that came to mind was, “Oh my god, they’re not gonna include… the Cardcaptors dub, are they?” Which wouldn’t make sense. Most people who are willing to shell out over $200 for this set wouldn’t want to see that monstrosity. Plus, it’s only a partial “dub”, less than half of the scenes would have English audio that doesn’t go with what’s being shown on screen – the rest will be silence.

But then I remembered… there was one dub, one very obscure dub, that was actually faithful to CLAMP’s original animated tale and was in English  – the Asian dub presented by the Hong Kong-based studio Omni Productions that aired on Animax Asia some time ago! The voices in that dub were meh to me (for English dubs, I preferred the Media Blasters dub of Cardcaptor Sakura the Movie: The Sealed Card – that’s the dub I most accept as an English version of Cardcaptor Sakura), but considering how god awful Nelvana’s dub of the series was, I would have appreciated it if that was our dub instead. Anyways, here’s a short voice clip of Animax!Sakura:

[audio:http://theotakuspot.animeblogger.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Animax-Sakura-Introduction.mp3]

The pronunciation of “Sakura” and “Tomoeda” irks the living hell out of me, but the voice is overall more easy to take than Sakura Avalon’s valley girl voice (that sounded way too old to be Sakura anyway), especially since she’s in-character and not being brash and rude like her Nelvana counterpart. Despite preferring a redub with the Media Blasters cast, I think many fans of English dubs will appreciate NISA adding the Omni dub as a bonus. Not as a total weeb, but as a Cardcaptor Sakura fan, I’ll always recommend the remastered Japanese audio first and foremost though.

MIKOTO’S FANGASM METER BROKE, PLEASE FIX HIM OR DON’T

YES THERE IS A GOD

SHE LIVES, SHE LIVES!

BERSERKER Mikoto NISA, THANK YOU! YOU RESCUED MY PRECIOUS CARDCAPTOR SAKURA FROM THE VOID. I LOVE YOU. I LOVE YOU FOREVER, MARRY ME.

I FORGIVE YOU FOR ANY BAD TRANSLATIONS YOU’VE DONE IN THE PAST. HELL, WHAT THE HAY? THEY DON’T EXIST ANYMORE. MY MONEY IS ALL YOURS, HONEY!

bsdhbjadb Holy crap, dat Blu-Ray. Dat box. Dat art book. Dat poster. There’s even a new English dub, which I don’t really give two shits about because only Sakura Tange can be Sakura you PLEBS, but damn are they putting some tender-loving care into this release. Tender-loving care that this series deserved long ago by western anime companies. Sure, Geneon put some commendable efforts into their subbed releases of the TV series and English dub of the second movie, but they still acknowledged the existence of that diarrhea stain Cardcraptors and didn’t go through the effort of redubbing the entire series like what Broppon Ichi is doing right now.

THANK YOU, BASED NISA GODS.

[long pause]

Mikoto I’m okay now. Back to being a rationale, level-headed member of society.

Mikoto Update: In other news, I’ve been having a blast this quarter, guys. School is actually pretty fun now that I’m focusing on my major, and I’ve been playing Studio Ghibli/Level-5’s Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch for the PS3, which I’ll do a review on soon. I know I said I’d post final impressions about Kill la Kill (not gonna be a 100% positive one – just a warning), along with the newer season’s anime like No Game No Life, and rest assured that those will come. I’ve been watching a ton of anime as of late and will be making a bunch of posts these coming months. Also, Fanime 20014 is just around the corner, and I’m honestly pumped up for the most weeb month of my life.

Hoshizora no Memoria -Wish upon a Shooting Star- (visual novel) write-up will be up in the next day or two, so look forward to that.

Sakura Kinomoto’s birthday

Still waiting for that remake

誕生日おめでとう、 さくらちゃん!

I know it’s April 2nd in Japan right now, but it’s still April 1st here with all the April Fools shenanigans and whatnot. Of course, I don’t give much of a damn about any of that – I’d just like to dedicate this post to the birthday of one of the best female protagonists ever to grace the very existence of anime and manga. If there’s anything Cardcaptor Sakura-related, it’s pretty damn assured that I’ll post about it! 😛

That being said, I haven’t been posting all that much here because of classes (I’m always active on Twitter, though – so you’ll know if I’m actually dead or not). Rest assured, since it’s Spring Break, you’ll be seeing some final impressions on Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren, some after-thoughts on Kill la Kill, a full impression on the Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie trilogy, a few “nostalgia” posts here and there, and some other things I manage to finish up during my (otherwise) uneventful Spring Break in the near future.

That's actually a pretty good drawing

This was my least favorite episode (which isn’t saying much, since I love and enjoy all the Cardcaptor Sakura episodes in one way or another). Basically, Sakura gets into a situation that most of us got into when we were in early elementary school – procrastinating the hell out of our summer homework and ending up using the very last days of the break cramming it all in.

;_; Sometimes we just bring it upon ourselves.

Sakura clearly loves Summer Festivals!

yo dawg das kawaii

As with many anime series that actually extends to more than 12 episodes per usual, we *have* to get a festival episode. And Cardcaptor Sakura‘s 18th episode is all about our cute protagonist and her family/friends taking part in natsumatsuri (Summer Festival). By extension, that means we also get to see Sakura dawn a cute yukata and take part in summer thrills. It’s a really chill episode, along with a surprisingly chill Clow Card. I guess Clow Reed lost his sense of humor on the day he created it? Who knows. 😛

I pretty much love it whenever Japanese stories do a natsumatsuri segment. Back when Pocket Monsters was a respectable anime series, they had a natsumatsuri episode as well – one of the best filler episodes ever. And if you’ve ever read a visual novel, this setting is a pretty common event for some awkwardly cute romance depending on the route you’re taking. Da Capo II had this, definitely, and I vaguely remember CLANNAD having it too.

Yamazaki, stahp

Chiharu: Yamazaki, stahp

This was one of my favorite episodes back in the day… and I suppose it still is. 😛 Sakura and her class go on a trip for some beach fun. If only my elementary school had trips like these… Yes, it’s the obligatory beach episode, guys! The episode title, “Sakura’s Scary Test of Courage” ((さくらのこわーいきもだめし Sakura no Kowa~i Kimodameshi), means that it’s also a “Haunted House” episode as well.

Nowadays I realize that I like its equivalent in the manga more, simply because of mys hipping fanboyism. There, during this trip, was one of the first times Syaoran showed blushies towards Sakura. HNNNNNNNNNG

Possible Cardcaptor Sakura Remake?

I'M HAVING A HEART ATTACK

Full image here.

There’s been this piece of news circulating around the net since this morning. Apparently the producer of the Cardcaptor Sakura anime expresses a desire to make a new one, in an article found in the recent issue of the ANIMEDIA magazine.

Original Text: 本誌は「CCさくら」を捕獲したい!!
”汝のあるべき姿に戻れ、リメ~イク!”
「どうせなら、新しい『CCさくら』を作りたいです。できれば、だけど・・・」

Translation: This magazine wants to capture Cardcaptor Sakura!!
“If the anime did return, it would be a re~make!”
I want to make a new Cardcaptor Sakura, if possible, but…”

Source: オタク.com (translation by me)

Man. I personally love the idea of Studio Madhouse producing a Cardcaptor Sakura remake – I would go crazy. I loved the classic anime (which, in my opinion, is just as good as the manga is), but a remake would most likely be more of a direct adaptation of the manga à la Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, which I have no problems with. The inner SyaoSaku fanboy in me would like to see scenes in which they are married, though.

Fanime 2013 Cosplays

Mirakurun~

One of the things I love about anime conventions (or any convention for that matter) are the invasion of cosplayers. It was awesome seeing Downtown San Jose being infested and taken over by cosplayers and my fellow geeks and weebs. People might have been pissed by the traffic we caused and the endless lines we induced at restaurants, but we felt dominant! Made the city as “nigiyaka” (so to say) as San Fransisco is every night. It just made those four days and three nights so fun, and now that everything’s quieted down and returned to normal, I’m having post-con depression. 😛 I want Downtown Weebland again, dammit!

That being said, there were many great cosplays this year. I stopped to take a picture of almost every one of my favorite characters and shows whenever I came across them, but this is basically a list of my very favorite ones during the weekend. To those who didn’t make it into this blog post, I’d like to say that you definitely all made it to my Facebook albums. Just very wonderful memories overall.

Fanime 2013 Haul

Sweet dreams to ME

I now have a huge Ore Imō wallscroll hanging over my bed.

Hey guys! I’m back from school, and raring to post coverage on my experiences at Fanime 2013. Fortunately (or rather, unfortunately?), Fanime is the time of year where I stop giving a shit about college in favor of catering to the weeb inside of me, so I’ll start posting more often on my own damn blog again and talk about shows I’ve finished and started. At least before Wahfuu gets tired of giving my blog respiratory aid. Ahem.

Anyways, I’ll begin the Fanime coverage by talking about the awesome swag that I acquired during my trip at Fanime. I made a decent amount of money this year, and therefore I bought a lot more merchandize from the Dealer’s Hall compared to last year. Of course, it was limited to stuff I couldn’t find anywhere else otherwise, as Region 2 DVDs and the like tend to be pretty cheap when ordered off of sites like Right Stuf, so I limited myself to buying mostly imports and merchandise that are hard to come by normally.

Beware: Photos were taken from my crappy 3DS camera.

A very Cardcaptor Sakura holiday!

There’s really not much to say about this episode because there’s no real conflict concerning the Clow Cards. As a matter of fact, it’s pretty relaxing, with Sakura and her family going to the countryside for a vacation. She meets and befriends a kindly old man living alone there, who in actuality, is her great grandfather.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to all my readers and everyone in the anime blogosphere! Hope you’re having fun with holiday festivities and such.

This post will conclude my “12 Days of Anime” posts, but I will continue to reflect upon 2012 once New Years rolls around.

“Hey beautiful, whatcha’ doin’?”

Cardcaptor Sakura 【HD Rewatch】14 – Crossdressing Episode #1

At least cast a shorter guy for the role!

Tall women get me going. *growl*

These crossdressing-play episodes are full of hilarity. There’s a “Princess Syaoran and Prince Sakura” chapter in the manga, which is adapted into a later episode in the second season, but I love it how Madhouse basically one-upped the manga by giving Touya a crossdressing episode as well.

Oh yeah, aside from hilarity, those strange fangirls probably found some sick pleasure in seeing Touya in drag. 😛

It's like they just spoonfed me a great shot
“I’m NOT cleaning the toilet again!”

I love time loop episodes, with the exception of the anime version of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya‘s Endless Eight in which they decided to troll us with eight episodes of the same crap. Unlike Endless Eight, though, CLAMP’s lovable magical girl and her future boyfriend are immune to the memory-resetting effects of the time loop and therefore adverted certain doom. =P

Interestingly, I’ve always noticed in this episode that not only did it contain signs of Nanase Ohkawa promoting Syaoran’s role as compeition in the anime, but also alludes to other aspects in regards to a certain other CLAMP series (hint: it also contains Syaoran).
