The suffering continues…
My interest in actively discussing Puella Magi Madoka Magica died down significantly during the past couple of years. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the original anime series and enjoyed watching both of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Beginning Story and the Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Everlasting Story films, but I wasn’t a crazy enough fan for the series in the vein of, say, Neon Genesis Evangelion that I was super excited with seeing the same story played over again. Especially since (for example), unlike Rebuild of Evangelion‘s constant divergences that make it clear that it’s a new story/continuation, the first two Madoka movies were just recaps of the same 12 episodes of the anime series. There was nothing really new to talk about aside from the spin-off materials, so the wait for Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Rebellion Story was killer because I really wanted to know what was gonna happen after the TV anime’s conclusion.
That said, I was really excited to see this film. Partly because (again) “YAY, NEW MADOKA CONTENT“, and also, I had this feeling that Gen Urobutcher wasn’t exactly finished messing with the audience. I’ve described the original anime as a series with no shock absorbers, and I went in expecting this to be the same case. I thought I was prepared for the inevitable shock, whatever it was.
But I was wrong. I let my guard down. 「残念ã ã£ãŸã。ã€

One of the things I love about anime conventions (or any convention for that matter) are the invasion of cosplayers. It was awesome seeing Downtown San Jose being infested and taken over by cosplayers and my fellow geeks and weebs. People might have been pissed by the traffic we caused and the endless lines we induced at restaurants, but we felt dominant! Made the city as “nigiyaka” (so to say) as San Fransisco is every night. It just made those four days and three nights so fun, and now that everything’s quieted down and returned to normal, I’m having post-con depression. 😛 I want Downtown Weebland again, dammit!
That being said, there were many great cosplays this year. I stopped to take a picture of almost every one of my favorite characters and shows whenever I came across them, but this is basically a list of my very favorite ones during the weekend. To those who didn’t make it into this blog post, I’d like to say that you definitely all made it to my Facebook albums. Just very wonderful memories overall.

I now have a huge Ore ImÅ wallscroll hanging over my bed.
Hey guys! I’m back from school, and raring to post coverage on my experiences at Fanime 2013. Fortunately (or rather, unfortunately?), Fanime is the time of year where I stop giving a shit about college in favor of catering to the weeb inside of me, so I’ll start posting more often on my own damn blog again and talk about shows I’ve finished and started. At least before Wahfuu gets tired of giving my blog respiratory aid. Ahem.
Anyways, I’ll begin the Fanime coverage by talking about the awesome swag that I acquired during my trip at Fanime. I made a decent amount of money this year, and therefore I bought a lot more merchandize from the Dealer’s Hall compared to last year. Of course, it was limited to stuff I couldn’t find anywhere else otherwise, as Region 2 DVDs and the like tend to be pretty cheap when ordered off of sites like Right Stuf, so I limited myself to buying mostly imports and merchandise that are hard to come by normally.
Beware: Photos were taken from my crappy 3DS camera.

Excuse the shoddy image quality, the photo came from my 3DS
Recently, I’ve decided to improve my Japanese by owning more Japanese-language reading material. Luckily, when I went to go eat with my friends at Mitsuwa Marketplace San Jose, I noticed that there was a Kinokuniya Book Store right next to it. Remembering that a merchant at Fanime recommended it to me for manga, light novels, and whatnot (God bless him), I decided to go there after feasting on tsukimi udon and takoyaki.

I’ve grown to realize that some of my favorite anime/manga are the type of stories that present themselves as being tied to a particular genre… and then quickly go on to establish themselves as subversions to every trope associated with the genre.
That isn’t to say that all shows that fall into this category are qualified to be counted in my favorites, but twists and surprises like that certainly help an anime stand out.
On the sixth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…

So I just got around to reading Puella Magi Kazumi Magica: The Innocent Malice, up to the latest chapter. Suffice to say, it starts out pretty happy, but since I’ve watch the original Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime series, the quick shift to utter darkness didn’t catch me off guard this time around.
I have to say, the plot twist in chapter 14 was pretty awesome, especially since you can spot some clever foreshadowing while re-reading previous chapters. 😀 Even though it isn’t written by Gen Urobuchi, the overall spirit and mood of its parent series is still there, and is emulated perfectly by Maaki Hiramatsu. Kind of miss Ume Aoki’s designs though, but Takashi Tensugi’s art is pretty. This spin-off seems to have much more yuri undertones than its parent series did (which all could have been taken out of context, for all we know), so I’m a happy man. <3
Without being as spoilerish as possible, I summarize my thoughts on the latest chapter in two words: POOR KAZUMI.

I finally got off my bum and watched the one “magical girl” anime everyone’s been ranting and raving about: Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
