Fanime 2016 – Experience and Haul

Rider Henshin!

Rider Henshin!

This post is coming a bitsorta… uh, this post came too late. Fanime was over a month ago, and unlike other years, Fanime 2016 was kind of meh for me. Being surrounded by anime is always a pretty cool deal and the gaming room is always fun, but nothing really amazingly notable happened this year. For one, I didn’t manage to get Matsukaze Masaya’s autograph two days in a row, which was really disappointing, especially because I brought my Shenmue II box specifically for that. Last year I managed to get Nonaka Ai’s autograph! I didn’t particularly care much for the featured Japanese musical guest nor the dub voice actors/actresses enough to go to their autograph sessions.

The con was pretty anal about security this year. Maybe it’s a pervert control problem, I dunno. But unlike other years, they closed pretty much the entire convention center to outsiders besides the first floor/entrance (where it’s just cosplayers and high-as-fuck misfits gathering) and the hotels. Which sucks, because a lot of the fun shenanigans happened when my other friends who are too cheap to buy badges of their own mess come to hang out and mess around the con, and sometimes lending badges to friends who wanted to go into the dealer’s hall/arcade/whatever without inconveniencing everyone else. Another thing to note is the new issuing of “trigger warnings” for the con. Completely idiotic – apparently my generation of morons don’t know how PTSD actually works.

Also, of course, the year where we decide to get our badges directly at the convention center is the year where it decides to be fucking LineCon again. Last few years we’ve been getting our badges at the DoubleTree, which takes (at the most) 15 to 20 minutes, leaving the rest of Thursday for us to do whatever the hell wed want. All of those years, badge pickup at the convention center has purportedly been snappy as fuck. What even happened this year?

I guess one notable event that happened was outside the con on Sunday night, where two of my friends got shitfaced (one more than the other), and being the most sober out of the group, I had to make sure we all got back to the hotel room safely. We met some cool strangers that night, was pretty cool. Anyways, given how much of a downgrade Fanime 2016 was compared to Fanime 2015 overall, I suppose the obvious choices next year are either giving the con another chance or going to Anime Expo instead, depending on how tight my budget is.

I didn’t buy much this year, but I did get some pretty sweet stuff. And the cosplays are always cool, there seemed to be less Shingeki no Kyoujin and Kill la Kill cosplays this year compared to [insert random schoolgirl character] cosplay. I ain’t complaining. I took a ton of photos, but of course I’ll only share some.

Back with new content and a new PC

大学生の人生は大変だろう

Alright then… first post of 2016. Sorry about the sudden disappearance of new posts. What was supposed to be a month-long break from the blog for school turned out to be a disaster.

You see, I was going to write a Christmas/New Years post about my 2015 weeb highlights for 12 Days of Anime, but apparently my blog was hacked (hence the new layout you see before you, my old customized Pool theme was infected and had to be replaced because it was no longer supported by WordPress). Based Maestro thankfully fixed the blog for me, kudos for the great service even after all these years. But by then, it was no longer Christmas nor New Years Eve, so I decided to scrap that post entirely and the disappointment made me go on an indefinite break. I did spend some time to rework a newer theme to my liking, but… that was basically it. I think I have an idea as to why my blog was hacked, but I’m not going to get into it. Not worth it.

Here are some of the anime/manga/video game titles you may have seen if I was able to write the post on time: Owarimonogatari, One-Punch Man, Non Non Biyori Repeat, Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu, Shenmue III, and others. I might probably just give them individual articles one day, however.

But yeah, what have been up to since my last post? Well, my typical normie life aside, I managed to save enough to build myself a new PC during Black Friday, of course for my Design major, digital fan art, HD/1440p PC gaming, console emulation, and XTREME!!111 animu viewing. Here are the build specs.

Processor: Intel Core i7 4790k @ 4.00GHz (with overclock later when I get a better CPU cooler)
Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 5 (the psuedo-sound card audio quality provided by the motherboard is sextastic out of the box)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB Superclocked ACX 2.0
Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Red 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866
Local Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5″ Solid State Drive
Secondary Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5″ 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (should have gotten the 2TB version, but I was a dumbass and got scared by Backblaze’s circumstantial failure rate statistics)
Case: Enermax ECA3253-BW ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair CSM 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B3ST/BLK/G/AS DVD/CD Writer (reused, the case leaves room for me to add in a Bluray player, but I already have a PS3 in the meantime)
Case Fans: 1 Stock (Bottom-mounted), 1 Thermaltake Pure 12 LED 41.0 CFM 120mm Fan (rear)
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Drawing Tablet: Wacom Intuos Pen and Touch w/ Clip Studio Paint Pro
Monitor: Dell ST2310 23″ Full HD Widescreen LCD
Speakers: Altec Lansing ATP3 3-Piece Speaker System

Once I get my gaming keyboard/mouse combo and a new mouse pad, I’ll post pics of my setup. Very recently, I also received my copy of The Fruit of Grisaia along with the Grisaia series display box from Sekai Project’s KickStarter (the side I have on display vs. the other side). Can’t wait for the other two to come out.

Anyways, I’ve planned to start off a new year of Mahou Zenkai ~The Otaku Spot~ with a new series of posts called Localization Decisions For Literal Dummies, where I take a piss on extremely asinine localization/translation decisions and mishaps that happen in Official English versions/subtitles of the anime, manga, and games that come over here. Quality Control can be really bad on the translation side because of editors (people taking the translated text and making it sound natural in spoken English) not being familiar with the source material. Generally though, it also probably happens because they weren’t really thinking period or they’re just simply the type of people that like to smear their shit all over foreign works because they think they’re more creative than the original creators. With video games, it also isn’t limited to translation, but also handling the UI and typesetting as well. This series will generally consist of shitshortposts unless the subject matter happens to be really, really stupid.

Just as always, I’ll also continue to update my series of Cardcaptor Sakura posts and continue my recap of the Suzumiya Haruhi light novels. I must say, I am absolutely hyped at what CLAMP has in store for Cardcaptor Sakura‘s 20th anniversary. Cheers to an upcoming fun year.

FanimeCon 2015!

Anime conventions are something I look forward to every year now. I might go to Anime Expo someday, but for now, Fanime is the best local alternative and I honestly never regret it.

I was extra pumped this year ever since FanimeCon 2015 announced that Nonaka Ai would be attending the con as a guest. Holy heck, first time since 2012 that a Japanese voice actor/actress attended this convention! I missed out on Aizawa Mai the first time I went to FanimeCon, and Momoi Haruko stopped going to the convention before I even started attending the con as a full-weekend member (I forgot why she stopped going…). No offense to the English voice actors, but unless you’re Kenvin Conroy (who does not do voices in anime) or Steve Blum, I’m only going to care about meeting the vocal talents that hail from the country where Japanese entertainment originates from. Where my Sawashiro Miyuki at?!

Well, anyway, here are some highlights of my experiences at FanimeCon 2015: the good, the bad, and the weird.

Fanime 2015 Cosplay

A great hobby for great people

Last year, I didn’t take any cosplay photos because the con was overrun with Kek la Kek and Shingeki no Kyoujin cosplayers. Fortunately for this year, the amount of Ryuuko and Giants died down and I was able to witness a lot more variety of cosplays. Still, I was usually rushing around with my friends elsewhere so didn’t get too many chances to take snapshots of amazing costume work, but I did manage to squeeze in some photography.

Alright, I’m back from Fanime 2015. Unfortunately, I’ve come back to a horde of school projects I’ve neglected in favor of my special once-a-year geek-fest, so for now I’ll just go over the merch I spent my moolah on this year and share the rest of my Fanime 2015 experience later.

FanimeCon 2014 Haul & Thoughts

FanimeCon 2014

This year’s Fanime was a livelier experience than usual, mostly because half of the convention center wasn’t destroyed under construction for once and also because this year was the con’s 20th anniversary. The line to pick up badges went abnormally fast this year – going by almost instantly. We got kind of screwed because we picked up our badges at the Clockwork Alchemy line, which is usually the faster line, but got delayed for a few hours this year in comparison to the Fanime line (the line wasn’t long, but it took a while for the registration to actually start up). Nevertheless, we still got our badges faster than usual so we actually got to do things during Day Zero, so it was all cool.

There weren’t many bad things that happened this year. I met some pretty cool people, there were so many awesome cosplayers, and I had loads of fun with my friends this year. I became completely drunk at the hotel during the last night, which was pretty much the highlight strangely enough (I have never gotten that drunk before). You’d think the highlight would be having a ramen dinner at Ramen Tenma with friggin’ LilyPichu (a friend of Mr. Lex), but I don’t really give two shits about League of Legends and barely watch her channel, so.

So, let’s go over the things I bought at Fanime this year (which isn’t much compared to last year – Cardcaptor Sakura drained my wallet) and also the token weird experience.

Fanime 2013 Overall Experience (and the horrors of Yaoi Bingo)

No, I didn't go to the maid cafe. T_T

No, we didn’t go to the maid cafe. T_T

Truth be told, I was looking forward to going to Anime Expo 2013 during the earlier parts of the year – going to Fanime again this year was somewhat of a last minute thing. We ended up not having enough funds to afford going to LA and spending our time at the convention as pre-registered members. Fanime’s always fun, so I didn’t mind much. However, it did sour the experience in another way. Since we couldn’t book a room at the Marriott, Hilton, or any other nearby hotels this year (by the time we decided to go to Fanime again, all the reservations were full), we had to book a room at a motel called the “Hotel Elan” (yes, they call themselves a hotel) which was somewhat of a distance away from the San Jose Convention Center. It wasn’t too bad of a place nor was it miles away, but it was still far enough (approximately one mile) that we had to walk over there and take the bus every morning. We never got to the con at the earliest possible time, and since the neighborhood was pretty damn dangerous, we never stayed out too late. From now on, we’re definitely making plans for Fanime every year except when we’re 100% sure we’re going to another con.

Fanime 2013 Cosplays

Mirakurun~

One of the things I love about anime conventions (or any convention for that matter) are the invasion of cosplayers. It was awesome seeing Downtown San Jose being infested and taken over by cosplayers and my fellow geeks and weebs. People might have been pissed by the traffic we caused and the endless lines we induced at restaurants, but we felt dominant! Made the city as “nigiyaka” (so to say) as San Fransisco is every night. It just made those four days and three nights so fun, and now that everything’s quieted down and returned to normal, I’m having post-con depression. 😛 I want Downtown Weebland again, dammit!

That being said, there were many great cosplays this year. I stopped to take a picture of almost every one of my favorite characters and shows whenever I came across them, but this is basically a list of my very favorite ones during the weekend. To those who didn’t make it into this blog post, I’d like to say that you definitely all made it to my Facebook albums. Just very wonderful memories overall.

Sweet dreams to ME

I now have a huge Ore Imō wallscroll hanging over my bed.

Hey guys! I’m back from school, and raring to post coverage on my experiences at Fanime 2013. Fortunately (or rather, unfortunately?), Fanime is the time of year where I stop giving a shit about college in favor of catering to the weeb inside of me, so I’ll start posting more often on my own damn blog again and talk about shows I’ve finished and started. At least before Wahfuu gets tired of giving my blog respiratory aid. Ahem.

Anyways, I’ll begin the Fanime coverage by talking about the awesome swag that I acquired during my trip at Fanime. I made a decent amount of money this year, and therefore I bought a lot more merchandize from the Dealer’s Hall compared to last year. Of course, it was limited to stuff I couldn’t find anywhere else otherwise, as Region 2 DVDs and the like tend to be pretty cheap when ordered off of sites like Right Stuf, so I limited myself to buying mostly imports and merchandise that are hard to come by normally.

Beware: Photos were taken from my crappy 3DS camera.

12 Days of Chinese Cartoons, Day 3: Convention Time!

Must. Buy. EVERYTHING!

You know that feeling when your best friend is at a family barbeque while you’re at home writing posts about anime and singing silly Christmas carols?

You don’t? Er, yeah, I don’t either! 😛

On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…

THE SCHOLARS HAVE SPOKEN

Hm, what’s this now? Did I strike a nerve?

I’m not speaking for everyone who prefers Japanese audio in their Japanese media, but this is how I personally feel about dub fanboys. Fanboys, mind you, not fans. That, or people that think Japanese voice preferences are the qualities of lower lifeforms. I like a handful of dubs myself, so I can’t exactly be classified as a dub-hater, either. Just getting it out there before anyone jumps on me for being a fanboy of subs/raws. Truth is, I also can’t stand people who treat Japanese as the only language that deserves to exist either (it’s an awesome language, mind you, but wording it like that’s just going too far).

However, enough dub fanboys have ranted about such people in recent years, and the way they go about it is getting more and more obnoxious as the years go on. Even more obnoxious than the people who treat Japan as the only country worth existing. I feel the need to step in and give my own thoughts on the matter by picking apart common generalizations regarding people who prefer to watch their anime and play Japanese video games in Japanese. Basically, why these people (who act like it’s a cool thing to call people “weaboos” just because they prefer Japanese voices for certain things) are IDIOTS.

Innovative WAIFU TECHNOLOGY

I just might get one of these, since it’s 4 AM and I’m losing control of my life. No, I think I should make chocolate pudding instead. Yeah, that would be a better idea.

Seriously, foreveralone aside, it’s cute and the general idea of this technology would be helpful for games in the vein of Skies of Arcadia, Tales and Valkyria Chronciles (basically, 3D JRPGs) that go for the whole anime/manga-look. SKIES OF ARCADIA 2 A-GO-GO…? Or a no-no? ):

It would defintiely be awesome for visual novels aesthetically, that’s for sure. Interactivity notwithstanding.

Fanime 2012 Haul (a.k.a. the coolest SWAG ever)

Sena Artworks

I bought this art-book bundle that came with a free art bag, wall scroll, and cute card of Sena from Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai. The art was done by a Chinese circle that also included some Japanese artists. The drawings look really nice! Sadly, I can’t find any more stuff from them on Pixiv, since they’re predominately Chinese. Some of the pages are really ecchi, but hey, it was a nice deal for $25. If only I was able to find an artbook of my number one Kobato, everything would have been perfect!

Along with the art book, I managed to snatch me some Haruhi Playing Cards.

Fanime Con 2012 Recap, Photos, and Cosplays

Fanime Con 2012

Being a local to San Jose, it was kind of strange for my friends and I to reserve a hotel room for this year’s Fanime Convention. But hey, sometimes we all need to get away from the house once in a while, right? ^^;; Steven went along too and was, in fact, the brains behind the planning (and photos). What a good guy!

For many of us, it was the first time attending Fanime for the whole weekend. It certainly was for me. And I was looking forward to the event since the beginning of the year, so when the day of college finals were over and the days of endless amounts of cosplay and anime were about to begin, I was absolutely ecstatic.

I’ll be at Fanime 2012

Me on Yume's route

I apologize for not posting much since the middle of last year and AT ALL this year. I’ve been caught up in college. It’s obvious where I’d place priorities, right? And I’ve been playing more visual novels and reading manga than watching anime during my free time, along with hanging out with people at places that enriches my stomach. Da Capo II and Little Busters for the win! Hard to write about anime when you’re not watching at the same pace as everyone else right?

Starting on May 25, I’ll be going to the 2012 Fanime convention taking place at San Jose’s convention center, which conveniently coincides with the same day I take a summer break from college. I’m expecting to get a good experience from the convention. To atone for my borderline abandonment of this blog, I’ll post pictures and a write-up of my experiences at this year’s Fanime by mooching off any photos my friends take with their cameras.

One thing I’m expecting to see? THE POKEMEN!

Until they get kicked out.

How far would you go for the sake of your hobbies?

Harmless school picture... or is it?

Haruhi, what has your crazy antics done to our world?

Nishinomiya Kita Senior High School has posted a warning against trespassers on its website after fans entered its premises and scrawled graffiti on the sports ground.

Asahi

It should be noted that this is fairly old news, and that real life attempts at reenacting Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody have been happening quite a lot in Nishinomiya. This is a pretty good example of unhealthy obsession.

Hey guys, it’s my birthday…

Birthday

…So instead of posting a generic wishlist detailing some of the weaboo goods I so desire, I will post the top ten most awesome things that could happen to you on your birthday. Since this is an anime blog, be sure to expect some of the most nonsensical and impossible things you could ever imagine.

(Alright, my birthday technically ended a few hours ago. But hey, this is better than sitting around playing Disgaea and Touhou all night~)

Man marries dating sim character

Isn’t this sad? Months on hiatus and THIS is what gives me the urge to blog again.

One word that describes what I’m feeling: WHOA. This is seriously one of the most ****ed up things I’ve ever heard of. Yet, it seems almost revolutionary. In a twisted, this-is-so-weird-that-it’s-almost-genius sort of way.

He’s just lucky that Love Plus is supposedly never-ending, or else he’d be horribly depressed at the lack of New Game Plus. As a man, I must say: What. The. Fuck. But as a geek, at least he has good taste in anime girls…

I don’t know what’s more messed up: the fact that he married a video game character… or the fact that his “wife” is having “affairs” with other men in other cartridges? Unless they somehow take her out of the market, in which case, “nice job for screwing over your fellow otaku, douchebag! D=<

… That poor DS is in for a rude awakening these upcoming years. I mean, that GBA slot looks like it could fit more than a GBA game. That is, assuming everyone is as lucky as I am. 🙂
