Happy “Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate” Day

In the end, I'd rather play Atelier

Most people probably got it during the midnight release yesterday and are currently enjoying their hunts as I type this. If I wasn’t so tight on cash right now, I would also be playing MH4U on that sweet limited edition New 3DS right now – maybe Majora’s Mask 3D as well.

…In all seriousness though, I keep forgetting that today is Valentine’s Day, a holiday that’s probably a favorite amongst various chocolate and confectionery industries. If you’re enjoying Valentine’s Day with that special someone, I hope you’re having a great one. But remember: everyday could be Valentine’s Day if you really love them that much. 😉 And if you’re single and Valentine’s Day gets you down the dumps for whatever reason, keep that in mind too. You have plenty of time to find that special someone (heck, today could be that day), and until then, it’s not like being single really hinders any day from being fun. So throw those complaints out the window, smile, and don’t be that guy.

Midterms are over and I’ll be back to frequently posting about weeb stuff, real soon. Have a great day, everyone!

CHINESE CARTOONS

The best satirical Facebook page ever

Japanese entertainment is fun to partake in and is a pretty fun hobby overall. And as you all know, I’m totally big on being passionate about your hobbies. I mean, damn, I wouldn’t have created this blog if I wasn’t. But remember, at the end of the day, hobbies are just hobbies. If you can’t take a moment to sit down and laugh at your own expense, and get extremely bothered by jokes, then it’s seriously time for you to dial back on how much you take your hobbies seriously.

This page is the perfect example of “all in good fun”: parody of an overly religious nut of a mother posting misinterpreted/stupid shit about anime and how evil it is. It’s simply hilarious.

MIKOTO’S FANGASM METER BROKE, PLEASE FIX HIM OR DON’T

YES THERE IS A GOD

SHE LIVES, SHE LIVES!

BERSERKER Mikoto NISA, THANK YOU! YOU RESCUED MY PRECIOUS CARDCAPTOR SAKURA FROM THE VOID. I LOVE YOU. I LOVE YOU FOREVER, MARRY ME.

I FORGIVE YOU FOR ANY BAD TRANSLATIONS YOU’VE DONE IN THE PAST. HELL, WHAT THE HAY? THEY DON’T EXIST ANYMORE. MY MONEY IS ALL YOURS, HONEY!

bsdhbjadb Holy crap, dat Blu-Ray. Dat box. Dat art book. Dat poster. There’s even a new English dub, which I don’t really give two shits about because only Sakura Tange can be Sakura you PLEBS, but damn are they putting some tender-loving care into this release. Tender-loving care that this series deserved long ago by western anime companies. Sure, Geneon put some commendable efforts into their subbed releases of the TV series and English dub of the second movie, but they still acknowledged the existence of that diarrhea stain Cardcraptors and didn’t go through the effort of redubbing the entire series like what Broppon Ichi is doing right now.

THANK YOU, BASED NISA GODS.

[long pause]

Mikoto I’m okay now. Back to being a rationale, level-headed member of society.

Mikoto Update: In other news, I’ve been having a blast this quarter, guys. School is actually pretty fun now that I’m focusing on my major, and I’ve been playing Studio Ghibli/Level-5’s Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch for the PS3, which I’ll do a review on soon. I know I said I’d post final impressions about Kill la Kill (not gonna be a 100% positive one – just a warning), along with the newer season’s anime like No Game No Life, and rest assured that those will come. I’ve been watching a ton of anime as of late and will be making a bunch of posts these coming months. Also, Fanime 20014 is just around the corner, and I’m honestly pumped up for the most weeb month of my life.

Hoshizora no Memoria -Wish upon a Shooting Star- (visual novel) write-up will be up in the next day or two, so look forward to that.

Academic Anime Watching

Being a student this quarter is not suffering

As some of you might already know from my Twitter, this week already marked the start of Spring Quarter over at my college institution. I’m taking three courses this quarter: one art class, one Japanese language class, and one Japanese Animation class. I’m not a film major (though I admit that such a thing isn’t anything unbefitting for me), I’m majoring in Graphic Design (getting both the AA and the BFA degree) and minoring in World Languages and Literatures (Japanese) + transfer. My reasons for taking Japanese Animation is simple: I needed a class to fill up time and the 12-unit minimum for Financial Aid, and what better than a class that’s fun and interesting, and most importantly, relevant to your hobbies? It’s anime, yo. Though since it’s academic, we’re not watching anything mindless like, say, some moe harem.

The best part of this [once a week] class is that most of its four hours is spent watching fantastic and influential anime films and discussing the aspects of each film, such as the narrative, how it relates to the context of the historical period, and the art form on a critical and analytical level. There’s a list of films we’ll watch over the course of the quarter on the class syllabus they handed out to us, and damn is it a good list, though I’ve already watched a handful of them! The first day, we watched two segments of The Cockpit and Panda! Go, Panda! The Rainy-Day Circus.

Along with the stuff I said I was going to get around to doing in Sakura’s birthday post, I’ll most likely write about the films we watch in class at least once a week. Even though I already reviewed some of them, it’s nice to revisit stories every now and again and share updated reactions. There are also essays to be expected for this class, and I will most likely post them up on here too (with bold markings of my name and class info so I don’t get reprimanded for plagiarism even though it’s clearly my shit).

It’s a really fun and engaging class, though of course there was clearly a Kill la Kill fanboy among us in the classroom, who also annoyed me by calling a deep and realistic character “flat and boring” (but I digress). To be frank, I love all of my classes this quarter! This is what college is all about. Focusing on your major/minor and taking classes on subjects you love. Oh yeah, and debt, but that’s besides the point (and I’m still in junior college for another year or so, I haven’t run into that much yet). Good thing about this quarter too is that it’s spring, it’s hot, and a bunch of cuties are running around right now and holy shit I think I’ll will find time for a relationship adadfak.

Sakura Kinomoto’s birthday

Still waiting for that remake

誕生日おめでとう、 さくらちゃん!

I know it’s April 2nd in Japan right now, but it’s still April 1st here with all the April Fools shenanigans and whatnot. Of course, I don’t give much of a damn about any of that – I’d just like to dedicate this post to the birthday of one of the best female protagonists ever to grace the very existence of anime and manga. If there’s anything Cardcaptor Sakura-related, it’s pretty damn assured that I’ll post about it! 😛

That being said, I haven’t been posting all that much here because of classes (I’m always active on Twitter, though – so you’ll know if I’m actually dead or not). Rest assured, since it’s Spring Break, you’ll be seeing some final impressions on Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren, some after-thoughts on Kill la Kill, a full impression on the Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie trilogy, a few “nostalgia” posts here and there, and some other things I manage to finish up during my (otherwise) uneventful Spring Break in the near future.

Things I bought at Marukai Marketplace

Another place for my weaboo-ness

Image Credit: Kayoko from Umami Map

Just thought I’d share some of my daily Wapanese exploits on my way home from De Anza College.

I usually come to this plaza to get a quick snack on my way home on the bus, usually going to Marukai Marketplace, Daiso, or Wing Stop. Depending on how much I feel like spending, I usually get either a candy bar, pre-made bento lunches (in cases where I’m going to school without lunch), ready-to-go sushi, or a full meal at Wing Stop. The lunch I bring to school sometimes isn’t enough to revitalize me for the entire day, and these snacks are better money spent than McDonalds, honestly. One dollar for a one-way bus trip to heart disease? No thanks.

The worst figurine of all time

KILL IT WITH FIRE

DAT FACE

Yeeeeeeeeah, the European Collector’s Edition of Bravely Default: Flying Fairy totally isn’t worth being jealous over. What was Square Enix thinking when they decided to bundle this monstrosity among the other goodies? Couldn’t they have gotten Figma? Or maybe even Alter? Square Enix, here’s some advice: what looks to be equivalent to a Chinese knock-off isn’t worth the extra expense. Poor European fans.
If only they did Elise...

THIS is a figure (now if only I could find one of Elise, then all would be swell).
So yeah, in other news, I’m pretty hyped for Bravely Default: Flying Fairy coming out in America next month. I may or may not get it at launch depending on my finances. I still haven’t bought The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds yet, after all…

Season’s Greetings!

Merry Christmas!

I hope all of you guys out there are having a wonderful holiday! I just finished watching the final episode of Kyoukai no Kanata a few days ago, so I’ll be writing my full thoughts on that series later this week. Even though I’m not exactly taking part in what is traditionally considered “12 Days of Anime” this year, I’ll also post some end-of-the-year rambles as a treat to the readers that put up with my nonsense.

As usual, my Christmas wasn’t anything particularly special – I hung out with family and friends (like every year, just on Skype), but I got into the holiday spirit by giving away free starter Pokemon on Pocket Monsters XY that weren’t available to non-Asian countries until the 27th-28th an unknown date on Pokemon Bank (I got them via connections and some randomly on Miracle Trade). I was basically mass-breeding them and sending them to whoever asked for them and to random passerbys on the PSS, in exchange for any Pokemon (I accepted throwaways). I also dumped more than a dozen of each onto Miracle Trade. I know that it made a lot of people happy to see their favorite starters on Amie/Parler (I know I’m enjoying the hell out of playing with my Chikorita and Mijumaru on Amie!), so it made me happy to give them the experience before the actual international Pokemon Bank opening.

Have a wonderful holiday break everyone, and stay safe.

Do I dare watch “Free!”?

My inner vagina is confused

OH DEAR GOD WHAT

Now, as some of my readers might know, I have no problems with watching shows aimed at a more feminine fanbase. In fact, I love them as much as more testosterone-ridden GAR shows that are on my list (Samurai Champloo, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, GaoGaiGar, etc.)

But this. This is different.

This is very different. A bunch of shirtless, muscular well-toned sexy men cutting loose in the pool. I suppose the plot is about swimming? Because when I was in high school, I know very well what went on in the locker rooms after a day of swimming. For all I know, the plot could be about that as well.

So, what do you guys suggest? Is Free! worth watching? Will I be the same after I watch it? Is this a break-through from Kyoto Animation in terms of revolutionizing swimming and what it means to swim?

( ?´_ゝ`) Yes? No? Replies from males and females are all welcome. Telling me why you like it without spoilers would be helpful as well.

(And yes, I’m well-aware of the true reason why a handful of people watch this show, I’m just giving it the benefit of the doubt and most likely pay for it because of my open-minded personality.)

Anime-esque dreams

I ship all the Yuru Yuri girls, by the way.

I just woke up around thirty minutes ago. And, I had a dream that I can’t exactly describe. It was apparently real life, but it felt like a visual novel/anime. I was a bum student (the ones that are considered delinquents in Japan, like Tomoya Okazaki) and I had a teacher that believed in me (like Hiratsuka-sensei is to Hachiman). One thing lead to another, and I ended up interacting and falling in love with a very sweet innocent girl that brought out the good in me. I talked to her a lot and it made me happy.

All the while Key BGM (mostly from Air, Kanon, and Clannad, but I’m not sure if any were from Little Busters!) was playing in my head. The dream ended in me running in the rain to give her dango presents. I woke up, and for some reason, heard Philosophyz in my head even though I haven’t read Rewrite yet… I feel nonchalant for some reason, my stress is all gone. But for some reason (and I admit, it’s weird to say), I feel that I’d like to meet that girl again. 🙁

(This is also the first time in a long while that I slept at a normal time and woke up at a reasonable time like a normal human being.)

Have you guys ever had anime-esque dreams? Did they make you happy, sad, etc.?

Innovative WAIFU TECHNOLOGY

I just might get one of these, since it’s 4 AM and I’m losing control of my life. No, I think I should make chocolate pudding instead. Yeah, that would be a better idea.

Seriously, foreveralone aside, it’s cute and the general idea of this technology would be helpful for games in the vein of Skies of Arcadia, Tales and Valkyria Chronciles (basically, 3D JRPGs) that go for the whole anime/manga-look. SKIES OF ARCADIA 2 A-GO-GO…? Or a no-no? ):

It would defintiely be awesome for visual novels aesthetically, that’s for sure. Interactivity notwithstanding.

Noizi Itou 【Live Drawing】

As an anime/manga fan-artist, I keep myself updated on Wacom’s YouTube channel, a company which produces high-quality graphics tablets (of which I do not own, ARGH), and every so often they upload a video showcasing well-known artists using their tablets such as the Cintiq 24HD.

For fans of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Shakugan no SHANA, Another, various Unison Shift visual novels, etc. that also happen to be fans of their artwork, you have to be familiar with Noizi Itou, the illustrator and character designer for all of these works. Wacom’s recent video just happens to showcase her doing what she does best. So yeah, here’s a chance to see her skills in action through digital media. ^^

I will become a Megane soon enough

My Meganekko waifuI just went to get my eyes examined. Turns out my vision is so shitty I’ll have to wear glasses everyday.

If only anime tropes applied to real life; that being the case, I would either choose to be the Spectacled Sadist or Stoic Spectacles within my group of friends (or even better, within the interwebz).

Interesting to note, most of my favorite anime characters that wear glasses don’t even friggin’ need them. Yuki Nagato loses her glasses midway through the original run of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (I disagree with Kyon, she looked good with glasses). Jade Curtiss wears his glasses in order to suppress the awesome spell he casted onto his eyes in Tales of the Abyss. I don’t know why Satoshi Hiwatari/Hikari from D•N•Angel wears glasses, but he obviously doesn’t need them.

Glasses seem to either be a completely normal thing, fetish fuel, or a symbol of badassery in the world of anime, manga, and video games. Why can’t my life be like that?! Makes me feel better about my terrible vision. xD Instead of looking at it in a bad way, let’s look at the positives: I’m getting my glasses from a VERY pretty Asian lady in her early 20s (hurray for me being male estrogen brigade jailbait). btw, she smells nice.

Which type of glasses-wearing character do you prefer?

NGE scene that doesn’t work out in *any* language

Soryu/Shikinami Langley Asuka

NGE fans are sure to remember this scene, especially if they watched the English or German dubs. Asuka speaking German and “Japanese” in three different language versions: Japanese, English, and German.

According to German fans, Yuko Miyamura’s German sounds terrible and incomprehensible. Given Asuka’s German descent and the fact that she was raised in Germany, it makes no sense for her German to sound so terrible.

The English dub is also pretty strange. While her German is much better compared to the Japanese version, Asuka says Shinji is thinking in Japanese and says they’re switching back to Japanese… while speaking in English. ADV couldn’t make her say “English” without bending Shinji’s nationality in some way, of course, which is understandable. Doing so would make Asuka fluent in English also, which would… gaaaahhh.

The German dub is the most hilarious one. EVERYTHING is in German, so when Asuka says they’re switching the language back to Japanese, they’re still speaking in German.

Is your mind blown yet?

Sometimes, things aren’t meant to make sense in anime. This was one of those moments where you had to kick logic to the curb. Because no matter how much you think about it, it will never work itself out. The best solution is to shrug it off, laugh, and continue to enjoy the show.

Enough with my German rambling: SWITCH LANGUAGE BACK TO JAPANESE.

Whatever happened to the 520 Cens Promise?

Money owned

Seriously, I totally forgot about it. Apparently Arakawa forgot about it too… or didn’t bring it up on purpose because Mustang hasn’t become the Fuhrer yet. A mention of it would have been nice, though. I guess she left it up for the readers to decide.

So, do YOU think Roy will ever get his money back? 😛

Or did that smart bastard Ed manage to get away with not paying the Flame Alchemist back? F-F-F-F-F

How far would you go for the sake of your hobbies?

Harmless school picture... or is it?

Haruhi, what has your crazy antics done to our world?

Nishinomiya Kita Senior High School has posted a warning against trespassers on its website after fans entered its premises and scrawled graffiti on the sports ground.

Asahi

It should be noted that this is fairly old news, and that real life attempts at reenacting Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody have been happening quite a lot in Nishinomiya. This is a pretty good example of unhealthy obsession.

Top 10 video games that can easily become anime

The World Ends With You

Honestly. You know, despite how horrible or loose video game adaptations tend to be… Within hundreds of video games, there are those certain gems that are pretty much playable anime. They would have no problem making the transition from one medium to the other. And then, of course, there are those games which actually have better stories than what you would discover in a lot of anime…

(Numbers hold no importance, although #1 is the most wanted one. Also, happy 4th of July!)
