Back with new content and a new PC

大学生の人生は大変だろう

Alright then… first post of 2016. Sorry about the sudden disappearance of new posts. What was supposed to be a month-long break from the blog for school turned out to be a disaster.

You see, I was going to write a Christmas/New Years post about my 2015 weeb highlights for 12 Days of Anime, but apparently my blog was hacked (hence the new layout you see before you, my old customized Pool theme was infected and had to be replaced because it was no longer supported by WordPress). Based Maestro thankfully fixed the blog for me, kudos for the great service even after all these years. But by then, it was no longer Christmas nor New Years Eve, so I decided to scrap that post entirely and the disappointment made me go on an indefinite break. I did spend some time to rework a newer theme to my liking, but… that was basically it. I think I have an idea as to why my blog was hacked, but I’m not going to get into it. Not worth it.

Here are some of the anime/manga/video game titles you may have seen if I was able to write the post on time: Owarimonogatari, One-Punch Man, Non Non Biyori Repeat, Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu, Shenmue III, and others. I might probably just give them individual articles one day, however.

But yeah, what have been up to since my last post? Well, my typical normie life aside, I managed to save enough to build myself a new PC during Black Friday, of course for my Design major, digital fan art, HD/1440p PC gaming, console emulation, and XTREME!!111 animu viewing. Here are the build specs.

Processor: Intel Core i7 4790k @ 4.00GHz (with overclock later when I get a better CPU cooler)
Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 5 (the psuedo-sound card audio quality provided by the motherboard is sextastic out of the box)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB Superclocked ACX 2.0
Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Red 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866
Local Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5″ Solid State Drive
Secondary Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5″ 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (should have gotten the 2TB version, but I was a dumbass and got scared by Backblaze’s circumstantial failure rate statistics)
Case: Enermax ECA3253-BW ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair CSM 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B3ST/BLK/G/AS DVD/CD Writer (reused, the case leaves room for me to add in a Bluray player, but I already have a PS3 in the meantime)
Case Fans: 1 Stock (Bottom-mounted), 1 Thermaltake Pure 12 LED 41.0 CFM 120mm Fan (rear)
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Drawing Tablet: Wacom Intuos Pen and Touch w/ Clip Studio Paint Pro
Monitor: Dell ST2310 23″ Full HD Widescreen LCD
Speakers: Altec Lansing ATP3 3-Piece Speaker System

Once I get my gaming keyboard/mouse combo and a new mouse pad, I’ll post pics of my setup. Very recently, I also received my copy of The Fruit of Grisaia along with the Grisaia series display box from Sekai Project’s KickStarter (the side I have on display vs. the other side). Can’t wait for the other two to come out.

Anyways, I’ve planned to start off a new year of Mahou Zenkai ~The Otaku Spot~ with a new series of posts called Localization Decisions For Literal Dummies, where I take a piss on extremely asinine localization/translation decisions and mishaps that happen in Official English versions/subtitles of the anime, manga, and games that come over here. Quality Control can be really bad on the translation side because of editors (people taking the translated text and making it sound natural in spoken English) not being familiar with the source material. Generally though, it also probably happens because they weren’t really thinking period or they’re just simply the type of people that like to smear their shit all over foreign works because they think they’re more creative than the original creators. With video games, it also isn’t limited to translation, but also handling the UI and typesetting as well. This series will generally consist of shitshortposts unless the subject matter happens to be really, really stupid.

Just as always, I’ll also continue to update my series of Cardcaptor Sakura posts and continue my recap of the Suzumiya Haruhi light novels. I must say, I am absolutely hyped at what CLAMP has in store for Cardcaptor Sakura‘s 20th anniversary. Cheers to an upcoming fun year.

Anime Blog CPR

CASH

Alright… uh, well then. Seems this blog has been dead for a few months now. I’ve been caught up in finishing up the last of my junior college education, handling work, and family responsibilities, so much that video games and watching anime have been my priorities for downtime activity rather than writing about anime. Sorry guys.

Though, with this school quarter giving me plenty of free time to myself, I think I’ll find more time to write about weeb shit every now-and-then (I only have one physical class + work two days a week; online class is ezpz and my Japanese club is inconsequential, so I essentially have the rest of the days off). I’m going to start off by finishing up my UBW blog posts now that the Blu-rays are out (I never got around to doing a post about the anime-original epilogue; plus, the good ending is animated as a bonus on the BD, all hail Seibah) and I’ll probably write about the last half of the Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 2wei adaptation (heads-up: mostly my views on it as an adaptation… and I know much the anime fandom loves primaries lololol hahaahaha fuck you).

It’s great to be back. Remainder that if I ever disappear (again), you can always catch me on Twitter.

[Interesting reads this week: The Trans-Pacific Partnership – The Trade Agreement that will Destroy the Anime Fandom as We Know It – Chikorita157’s Anime Blog

The TPP is heretical and is an affront to the common good. On the smaller side of things, it also affects anime and video games negatively. Don’t let it happen.]

I declare this month “Happy Month”

Time to be magical

Because my birthday was like, two days ago, and the feel of attaining the most possible adult freedoms available in California is awesome (I’m 21 now? Yessir!), I declare this month “Happy Month” in which posts and rants about terrible or mediocre things is kept to a minimum in comparison to things that make me smile. Well, at least posts written by me will be happy this month. I rant about terrible things enough outside of the blog as it is, to the point where you could call me a weeb version of AVGN without a Motherfucking Mike holding me back. I was *this* close to ranting about anime/non-anime fans using certain terms un-ironically, but I’m gonna put that on hold for HAPPY MONTH.

Things that I plan on doing, considering my summer college schedule, is as follows: I’ll also be posting about Cardcaptor Sakura mostly (need to finish those lookback posts!). And then No Game No Life, which was actually pretty good for the most part (it reminded me of the Yuugiou manga). That will all happen once I post up my Kill la Kill final impressions (you must go through Meh Land before you get to Happy Paradise. It will the only time I’ll be sad, I promise).

(And it will keep me occupied until August, when my child arrives. The joys of becoming a father are coming, guys. ;_;)

Still waiting for that remake

誕生日おめでとう、 さくらちゃん!

I know it’s April 2nd in Japan right now, but it’s still April 1st here with all the April Fools shenanigans and whatnot. Of course, I don’t give much of a damn about any of that – I’d just like to dedicate this post to the birthday of one of the best female protagonists ever to grace the very existence of anime and manga. If there’s anything Cardcaptor Sakura-related, it’s pretty damn assured that I’ll post about it! 😛

That being said, I haven’t been posting all that much here because of classes (I’m always active on Twitter, though – so you’ll know if I’m actually dead or not). Rest assured, since it’s Spring Break, you’ll be seeing some final impressions on Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren, some after-thoughts on Kill la Kill, a full impression on the Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie trilogy, a few “nostalgia” posts here and there, and some other things I manage to finish up during my (otherwise) uneventful Spring Break in the near future.

12 Days of Anime, Day 9: My return to blogging

Blogging will eat you alive like 2hu

Recently, I’ve looked over some of my earliest posts on this blog, back when I started this blog around the middle of my junior high school days (2007). My reaction to my earlier days on the internet?

Funnily enough, I noticed that six months into blogging, the way I expressed myself and my writing in general became a lot less cringe-worthy (at least to my present-self!). Don’t know how that worked out, maybe it was puberty or something.

On the ninth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…

RE: The roots of our fandom

One of my first anime

Yumeka of Mainichi Anime Yume wrote an article where she harkened back to her childhood and examined the origins of when her love of anime first began and, of course, why it still persists in her heart today. She asked her readers if they could trace any instances of early “nerdom” within their childhoods that may have contributed to their love for anime today and if there were any obstacles in regards to the indulgence in these hobbies (home environment, parents, peers, etc.)

Instead of sharing my own story as a comment on her blog, I decided to reply to it as a post of my own.

Lex as in Lex Luthor? Wait, no it’s just that Asian kid.

xxstevenlexx = Steven Lex

Lex = Lex Luthor

Ergo, I am Steven Luthor Lex. Something like that. Unfortunately, my name is Steven Le, so that kind of ruins the whole gag. Some a few none of you may remember me, but I was a shortlived video game reviewer here on The Weaboo Otaku Spot, until I was savagely euthanized by Mikoto.

I almost forgot I had an anime blog. ( _| ̄|○ )

Another mouth-to-mouth resuscitation post. Oh great.

Yes, I really did forget I had an anime blog. I’ve been so focused on school work lately that it’s all I’ve been focusing on the last two months. Because I’m a perfectionist like that.

Also, being in love with cute girl is cute.

But then it hit me! I had a blog that had become even more less than perfect because of the recent scarce updates! That broke my spirit greatly, so I came back to the interwebz.

Along with my comeback, I’ve made two (MAJOR!!!) changes to the blog:

1) Welcome Seiryuu! Lost My Music! (under request =]) to the blogroll! Which shouldn’t be mentioned in the first place other than making this update seem bigger (xD).

Big blogroll is big…

2) New banner to reflect some holiday spirit (Christmas!Shana, illustrated by Noiji Itou, of course). What better day than today? It is, after all, December 1.

Yes, I realize that I exaggerated on the “major” part.

Welcome me back or die.

Wow, I haven’t updated in like… forever.

WOW… I apparently took “cutting down posting everyday because school’s begun” seriously since the last post. And by seriously, I mean I haven’t posted… at all ( ^^;; ).

I haven’t lost interest in anime. I just haven’t watched much recently (Okay, I think I just sounded retarded right now…). I’ve been watching more JDrama, HKDrama, and KDrama more than anime lately (I’ve also sharpened up on my Kamen Rider fix!) and of course, along with the good ol’ school stuff; getting pissed off at people abusing the word “emo” and doing schoolwork. Okay, maybe not that much schoolwork and more of using the “sit there and do nothing but stare at an empty wall-time” to obsess over a girl I’ve been obsessing over for the past 5 years (It’s all healthy, okay?!). I’ve been doing that during the summer too, but for some strange reason I found time to watch anime during that long period. Maybe because I haven’t actually SEEN her in a while, ya’ know? (;

Well, I’m just posting to tell you all that I’m still alive and kicking, and I’m back to watching some more anime. =D I’ll probably make the usual (or was usual) anime post tomorrow. I wanted to ma[ke one today, but I really do have a stuffy nose right now (why do they make us swim when some of autumn’s cold weather is starting to hit?!). Ugh.

Generic introduction post

After a few months of mixed feelings, I decided to make a blog about one of my most loved hobbies of all; anime and manga. Expect some generic anime reviews and manga reviews, and even some posts about video games, real life rants, and some Japanese media occassionally.

My taste in anime and manga is a very open one, yes. I love cute series, serious series, tragic series, happy series – any series that breaks the mold of stereotypical characters and makes something new out of them (now, that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy some generic mainstream every now and then…). It wasn’t until now that I decided to start up an anime blog – I wanted to share my opinions on different anime with other people within the safety of the internet.

That there ends this generic post… of introduction.
