I've kind of stopped lurking around VN-Centric websites/circles and kept to just talking to a few people that seem reasonable. I used to go around /vg/ and other random forums now and again, though. I guess it is mostly toxic, sadly. I'm surprised to hear that the places you hang around are bad too though. I didn't think the TL-Wiki/Commie circle would be all that dramatic.

Although looking at the article now, I really just wanted to tell everyone to shut up because Aroduc didn't deserve it but I kind of ended up arguing for the kickstarter. Might have been a bit silly of me.

I simply think that what Rewrite does well it does really, really well. I agree with most people when it comes to Rewrites flaws. You can't really deny them. I simply loved the idea and really liked what Romeo did. Also it's one of the best common routes I've ever done, so. That's my explanation.

I can't comment about KWS. I thought it was mneh. Fanfictiony. Seems like a lot of people that exploded over KWS were people just getting into VN's.

Don't get me wrong: I think Rewrite's a good visual novel. That's why I rated it 7.2/10. Whether it deserves the crazy hype and love is another thing. Like how people rate Katawa Shoujo as a masterpiece against all the visual novels, Rewrite is overrated. I don't get the popularity when it's just a good VN, not a great VN. Same with most KEY works that isn't Clannad. And Rewrite's too long and I only liked two heroines out of five. There's so much problems it pulls the VN down from the potential.

The VN community is mostly <i>toxic</em>. Even the cool places I lurk at are, by definition, horrible areas. Like fansubbing drama, it's melodramatic and painful to read. And you wish everyone can just shut up.

But that's how the world works. It revolves around drama. The existence of sensible people means we are required to be sensible. So at least be sensible about the drama popping up. And tell the drama queens, "God, you guys are really damn annoying. Shut up."

> Do Rewrites side-routes make sense within the context of the story? Yes.

Someday, I won't be a lazy fuck so I can write about Rewrite because it's such a flawed visual novel. For all the side-routes do make sense in the context but they don't advance the plot. Lucia's, for example, is a mystery-cum-diabetic-rom-com. Her character virtually does nothing in the game and this makes sense when you realize that she was added in after the common route was written. In Shitzuru's route, she appears for a fraction of a second before disappearing. Great character.

I'm probably pissed that Rewrite could have been a better work. Like every KEY VN, there's a huge deal of potential waiting to be tapped; its writers and guest writers though don't use it. It's such a terribly good waste it just makes me sad.

Admitedly I think I've hung around the more toxic portion of the VN community, which is why I said that in the post. It just seemed like nothing but placing work on a pedestal and throwing as much shit as you possibly can at it until it topples over. It just seemed like Aroduc was signing up for a ton of stress for a small reward. I'm glad to hear that the warm and fuzzies one gets overwrite can actually cancel out all the white noise one gets.

>Look, I love fan translators, especially since my japanese hangs very close to the absurdly shitty end of things, but <b>I’ve always wondered why they do it</b>. The visual novel community are incredible ungrateful and when they aren’t infighting over intellectual superiority when it comes to taste they look to instead shit on translators for being inaccurate/bad/drama-filled and whatever.

Because there are a lot more sensible people like you that appreciate what we do than there are lunatics yelling at us. For me, the thing that makes me keep doing this long-term are the download counts. Back when I did MOON I was honestly shocked to see more than a hundred. Now my MLA and Rewrite patches each have over 13000 downloads (just from our site!), and when you look at how those people voted on vndb, it's obvious that the silent majority is enjoying my work immensely.

Plus, the vehemently ungrateful people tend to gather in very specific groups/sites/chatrooms which I have learned to avoid like the plague, so the worst of it I just never hear anymore.

Oh dear god, I was forum surfing at the same time and totally switched the tags. That's slightly embarassing.

Anyways,
I simply don't like the decision. It just comes off at a forced attempt at a depressing ending that didn't really need to be there besides the theme of 'earn your happy ending' that is prevelent through-out Rewrite. I feel a lot of Shizuru's route is 'enjoy your time together while it lasts', which gets absolutely blasted by an ending like this where they are 'technically' together still. And once again, The route does absolutely little to explain the process behind Rewriting yourself into semi godhood. This description was actually quite a bit worse until I read Chihayas route. Not only that, in Chihayas route, it implies that this change isn't neccessarily permanent, either, which devalues the living hell out of it.

Truth be told, I almost want to say I think it'd have been better to have Kotarou pass away in salvation rather then Rewriting himself into this, but my heart can't bring myself to really officialize it, cause I would have been really damn sad instead of stupified.
Messed up the spoiler tags there...
I just skipped until the end of her route again just to confirm my thoughts. He first severed the connection between Shizuru by Rewriting it before Rewriting himself into quasi immortality, meaning that he didn't need to be immortal to sever the chain. You're right in that it doesn't say he has to endure salvation but that was his decision. Like I said:

"Sakuya became a tree because he wanted to live and repent, in order to make up for not protecting his girl (forgot her name). Kotarou did the same but to fulfill the promise he made with Shizuru."

That promise was that they would meet again, and to do that, Kotarou felt that he had to survive salvation.
Hmmm.. I'm trying to think of a way to explain without spoiler tags, but I think I'll have to.
It all feels forced to me. I understand that he used the Rewrite ability to not be a drain on Shizuru, but to me, the entire sacrifice felt really stupid. This might just be me, but it was never said that he needed to Rewrite himself into quasi immortality to sever the chain with him and Shizuru, and no where in this contract does it say he has to sit there and endure salvation. I don't get it.

Also, why it happens is very, very vague. I know it's sort of explained in Chihaya's route, but that isn't exatly a point in favor of this route. It's simply very, very random. And no, I wasn't really expecting a happy ending. Rewrite has a very big theme of; "Earn your happy ending" and Kotarou was a burden during this route, but I was expecting something. A lead up. Satisfying. And this simply wasn't it. I understand why people like it, truthfully. Especially because of Shizuru the character.
I'd also like to quote Shikon here before you write your response.

"Yeah I completely agree, I rarely ever say anything negative about a favorite series but with that being said I still acknowledge the negative aspects(which sometimes I may not realize until its brought to my attention)."

I simply don't understand all the hate for the ending... I just don't...
The whole tree thing was Kotarou's way of surviving "salvation". Sakuya became a tree because he wanted to live and repent, in order to make up for not protecting his girl (forgot her name). Kotarou did the same but to fulfill the promise he made with Shizuru. What exactly were you expecting in terms of payoff? Given the entire build up at the end, you couldn't have expected a happy ending right?
Perhaps I just need you to explain specifically why you called the ending pointless symbolism...

Really, be quite honest, since I enjoyed the ending so much, I'm having trouble keeping my fanboyism in check after reading your review.

A week later and instead of beating Etrian Odyssey IV, I've put over 65 hours into Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate...maybe I should repent by making a post for it since this EO IV review isn't going to happen anytime soon at this rate.
