Ragging on Japan for no reason – not doing the research

7:19

“…What am I saying to these girls? No matter what I choose they always seem to have sex with me.”

-Gamespot

Yeah. Yeah, this guy is a moron.

Joking about Japan’s perverse media is all in good fun. That is, when it applies. When it doesn’t, you just come across as a giant bigot.

Which is exactly what this is.

Innovative WAIFU TECHNOLOGY

I just might get one of these, since it’s 4 AM and I’m losing control of my life. No, I think I should make chocolate pudding instead. Yeah, that would be a better idea.

Seriously, foreveralone aside, it’s cute and the general idea of this technology would be helpful for games in the vein of Skies of Arcadia, Tales and Valkyria Chronciles (basically, 3D JRPGs) that go for the whole anime/manga-look. SKIES OF ARCADIA 2 A-GO-GO…? Or a no-no? ):

It would defintiely be awesome for visual novels aesthetically, that’s for sure. Interactivity notwithstanding.

Sword Art Online The Expansion: FAMILY PORTRAITS

This is a family game

A game made for the family.

While I haven’t particularly been enjoying the blatant harem-building some of these side-stories seem to be going for (they’re not that interesting, really), they’re admittedly still decently written. I have been enjoying the Kirito/Asuna ship teasing these past few episodes, but nothing seems to top the first three episodes in terms of quality, in my opinion.

What rattled my brain during episode 7, however, was what seemed to be a family photo in Lis’s workshop shown above. Look at her age! How is this even possible? Wasn’t SAO a somewhat recent MMO (which is within the premise of the story)? If it’s not from the game, could it be an import from real life? Then why is her family wearing SAO armor? Gah. I guess this makes more sense if it was during beta testing (where player avatars didn’t have to resemble their RL bodies), but that’s kind of stretch, in my opinion. How long was beta testing again?

On another note: why are people calling her “Liz/Lizbeth” when it clearly says “Lisbeth” on her combat display? That’s pretty silly. xD

(Also, the dragon. Man, if this was Monster Hunter, Kirito would have been screwed regardless of level. And the cooking system seems to blow the Tales series out of the water.)

You're not very honest, are you?

Baka! I-i-it’s not like… I like you or anything!

Sword Art Online 04

Must. Not. Get. Attached.

Regardless of any minor gripes I had with the anime originally, I commend it for putting me on my toes.

By that, I mean because of the previous episode’s little death show, I’m trying my best NOT to get attached to any characters in this anime. Especially since they’ve brought Player Killing into the mix, making the players a danger to each other as well. If it wasn’t for that, I would have savored the utter cuteness of Silica more, but I spent most of the episode expecting her to die. D:

RE: The roots of our fandom

One of my first anime

Yumeka of Mainichi Anime Yume wrote an article where she harkened back to her childhood and examined the origins of when her love of anime first began and, of course, why it still persists in her heart today. She asked her readers if they could trace any instances of early “nerdom” within their childhoods that may have contributed to their love for anime today and if there were any obstacles in regards to the indulgence in these hobbies (home environment, parents, peers, etc.)

Instead of sharing my own story as a comment on her blog, I decided to reply to it as a post of my own.

Sword Art Online: Likes and Dislikes (First Impressions)

MMOs are srs business

Now that I’ve finally got around to starting up Sword Art Online (the first three episodes), I finally gathered enough initial feelings about this anime in order to write a thorough impression on it.

I have to be honest here. The only other anime series about “playing an online game” that I ever really liked before this ever came around as an animation was the .hack series, if only for the strong character development, dialogue, and feeling believable as a high-caliber virtual MMO, despite the hazardous sides to it (Morganna, Data Drain, etc.).

So how exactly does Sword Art Online hold up for me in comparison?

School Days: Review/Rant!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

That’s right folks! JAST has released the very infamous School Days visual novel for all the public to see! So grab your blanket and sad-faces, right? Everyone knows how this is going to go! Everyone has seen this damn anime, so naturally, the visual novel is probably going to be equally as disturbing! I bet everyone who is probably avoiding this visual novel, as if it’s been infected with the black plague, is probably wondering who in their damn right minds would play the gore-fest horror-story that is School Days.

…Except, not really.

Want to know how this went? Long story short, it went fine. No, I’m serious. It went fine. And I’m sure a ton of people reading this is going to call me a liar, but I promise! No shenanigans. Seriously. This was honestly the most anti-climactic experience I think I ever had. So, if it went fine, I bet you’re wondering what this post is about then? Well, it’s honestly half a review, half a rant. So, let’s get this started!

Visual Novels vs. Dating Simulation Games

VNs Vs. Dating Sims

A widely skewed image of the visual novel genre. and a commonly incorrect usage of the term “dating simulation,” keeps people from trying out an otherwise excellent method of storytelling.

Take the rather recent “Katawa Shoujo,” for instance. Many people went in thinking it was a “dating sim” about disabled girls. While the story is about disabled girls, it is not a dating simulation game. It’s intended to be an emotional visual novel that will break even the most wicked of souls (it’s actually rather average). Calling it a dating simulation game is as correct as calling Half-Life 2 an RPG. Or Eiken a “good anime” (ha ha). Which is why I felt like making this post, “Visual Novels vs. Dating Simulation Games.” For all you savvy folks out there, this post isn’t to put down one or the other, but to educate.

Within this post, I will post both the similarities and differences between visual novels and dating sims, and hope to take down any misconceptions about the former by forming a clear description of what the latter really is.

Phoenix Wright/Naruhodou Ryuuichi gets his own movie!

Objection! What the hell?

http://www.capcom.co.jp/gyakutensaiban/movie.html

So let me get this straight – An anime for Gyakuten Saiban/Ace Attorney has never been made, yet they get an idea to make live action film instead? Narimiya Hiroki doesn’t even look the part! Not enough spikes.

This better be good.

Emil Castagnier, Plue, & DaisukexRiku (Chibi Fanart)

It’s a school day and writer’s block calls for fanart dump.

Bonus 4koma (Strip #1. Yes, there will be more). An inside joke between the lazy co-writer (Steven) and I.

Emil Castagnier (Tales of Symphonia -Knight of Ratatosk-)
Plue (Rave Master)
Daisuke/Riku (D•N•Angel) (version 2 has slight differences)

All done with a mouse on Manga Studio EX 4.0. No tablets (everything would look better with tablets :P). Lightly-colored for an extra innocent chibi effect. Enjoy.

I will become a Megane soon enough

My Meganekko waifuI just went to get my eyes examined. Turns out my vision is so shitty I’ll have to wear glasses everyday.

If only anime tropes applied to real life; that being the case, I would either choose to be the Spectacled Sadist or Stoic Spectacles within my group of friends (or even better, within the interwebz).

Interesting to note, most of my favorite anime characters that wear glasses don’t even friggin’ need them. Yuki Nagato loses her glasses midway through the original run of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (I disagree with Kyon, she looked good with glasses). Jade Curtiss wears his glasses in order to suppress the awesome spell he casted onto his eyes in Tales of the Abyss. I don’t know why Satoshi Hiwatari/Hikari from D•N•Angel wears glasses, but he obviously doesn’t need them.

Glasses seem to either be a completely normal thing, fetish fuel, or a symbol of badassery in the world of anime, manga, and video games. Why can’t my life be like that?! Makes me feel better about my terrible vision. xD Instead of looking at it in a bad way, let’s look at the positives: I’m getting my glasses from a VERY pretty Asian lady in her early 20s (hurray for me being male estrogen brigade jailbait). btw, she smells nice.

Which type of glasses-wearing character do you prefer?

Top 10 Xenophobic/Ignorant Attitudes Aimed Towards Japanese Media

Five cool points if you can name all three of these characters

I’ll give you a cookie if you can name all three characters and where they originated. 😛

The list is in no specific order. #5 may apply to other countries, as well. Also note that I’m against these opinions, not siding with them.

How far would you go for the sake of your hobbies?

Harmless school picture... or is it?

Haruhi, what has your crazy antics done to our world?

Nishinomiya Kita Senior High School has posted a warning against trespassers on its website after fans entered its premises and scrawled graffiti on the sports ground.

Asahi

It should be noted that this is fairly old news, and that real life attempts at reenacting Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody have been happening quite a lot in Nishinomiya. This is a pretty good example of unhealthy obsession.

Top 10 video games that can easily become anime

The World Ends With You

Honestly. You know, despite how horrible or loose video game adaptations tend to be… Within hundreds of video games, there are those certain gems that are pretty much playable anime. They would have no problem making the transition from one medium to the other. And then, of course, there are those games which actually have better stories than what you would discover in a lot of anime…

(Numbers hold no importance, although #1 is the most wanted one. Also, happy 4th of July!)

Square Enix’s MMORPG Gets A Release in the US…WITHOUT ME NOTICING?!

Characters don't actually look this hot in-game.

So it seems ファンタジーアース ゼロ has now become Fantasy Earth: Zero! Right under my nose, a few months ago even! Yes, I used a simple language change as an analogy to the game being released in America.

I had begun following this game about 2 years ago, back when it was unreachable by me due to Gamespot Japan IP blocking all us would-be foreign players. Discouraged after an entire YEAR without a US release, I had stopped keeping track of the game and have now run across it due to me starting my yearly summer MMORPG stint.

The official release of the game was on May 18th, leaving me feeling silly for being so late on this. However, better late then never, and I figure I’d service the readers of The Otaku Spot with a review of the game! Joining me on this little adventure will be none other than Mikoto, who I haven’t asked yet, but I’m sure he has nothing better to do. No, seriously.

Anywho, before starting any MMORPG, I have to do my fair share of research, which I’ll share with you right here.

Overdoing things

Man marries dating sim character

Isn’t this sad? Months on hiatus and THIS is what gives me the urge to blog again.

One word that describes what I’m feeling: WHOA. This is seriously one of the most ****ed up things I’ve ever heard of. Yet, it seems almost revolutionary. In a twisted, this-is-so-weird-that-it’s-almost-genius sort of way.

He’s just lucky that Love Plus is supposedly never-ending, or else he’d be horribly depressed at the lack of New Game Plus. As a man, I must say: What. The. Fuck. But as a geek, at least he has good taste in anime girls…

I don’t know what’s more messed up: the fact that he married a video game character… or the fact that his “wife” is having “affairs” with other men in other cartridges? Unless they somehow take her out of the market, in which case, “nice job for screwing over your fellow otaku, douchebag! D=<

… That poor DS is in for a rude awakening these upcoming years. I mean, that GBA slot looks like it could fit more than a GBA game. That is, assuming everyone is as lucky as I am. 🙂
