RE: The roots of our fandom

One of my first anime

Yumeka of Mainichi Anime Yume wrote an article where she harkened back to her childhood and examined the origins of when her love of anime first began and, of course, why it still persists in her heart today. She asked her readers if they could trace any instances of early “nerdom” within their childhoods that may have contributed to their love for anime today and if there were any obstacles in regards to the indulgence in these hobbies (home environment, parents, peers, etc.)

Instead of sharing my own story as a comment on her blog, I decided to reply to it as a post of my own.

School Days: Review/Rant!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

That’s right folks! JAST has released the very infamous School Days visual novel for all the public to see! So grab your blanket and sad-faces, right? Everyone knows how this is going to go! Everyone has seen this damn anime, so naturally, the visual novel is probably going to be equally as disturbing! I bet everyone who is probably avoiding this visual novel, as if it’s been infected with the black plague, is probably wondering who in their damn right minds would play the gore-fest horror-story that is School Days.

…Except, not really.

Want to know how this went? Long story short, it went fine. No, I’m serious. It went fine. And I’m sure a ton of people reading this is going to call me a liar, but I promise! No shenanigans. Seriously. This was honestly the most anti-climactic experience I think I ever had. So, if it went fine, I bet you’re wondering what this post is about then? Well, it’s honestly half a review, half a rant. So, let’s get this started!

Characters of 2007

Characters of 2007... Ironically, two out of three of these characters weren't actually given any roles in any anime this year

A lot of us are looking back at which series are the most memorable this year for a variety of reasons – the quality of the storytelling, originality, niche gimmicks (moé, lolita, Shōtarō-characters, A Drill That Will Pierce Through The Heavens, unnatural boob measurements, etc.), and all that other shit. HOWEVER! To me, what really makes or breaks a series in being truly memorable, it all depends on the characters. In most cases, I would probably remember a series for a lifetime based solely on the characters (or a specific character) rather than the quality of the storyline or how deep it is (of course, if it’s THAT good than it’ll probably be the other way around!). The story could be utter crap for all I care and I’d still remember it if I really like the cast and their character dynamics. In my opinion, if an anime/manga has a story/concept that’s as cliché or horrible as saving a princess who gets her butt kidnapped by an evil witch/evil giant turtle yet has some top-notched character dynamics, then it would probably rank at the top of my list of favorite anime. Likewise, if the story is built FANTASTICALLY yet the characters are flat out boring, then it wouldn’t leave as much of an impression on me despite it having an excellent plot.

Or the character could be just be an utter jackass and the series will be memorable based on how much I wanted to shove a knife down their throat and throw him/her (most likely a HIM…) into a pit of acid…

To get down to business, this post will chronicle some of the characters that has made a big impression on me this year. Based on categories ranging from good to bad to OMG I WANT TO RIP HIS EYES OUT THAT DAMN MAKOTO, the cutest to the most inspiring to THE MOST SUPERLY AWESOME BADASS THAT HAS EVER WALKED DOWN THE PATH OF ANIMU… You name it.

(I’m obviously leaving Bacanno! out of this, since honestly, I can’t choose just one notable person from its large cast of characters)

School Days – How you *shouldn’t* have relationships.

Here, we have a chronicle of how I came to hate Makoto, the lead character of School Days and the worst “protagonist” EVER.

Episode 1:
Here, we have a typical guy who is too much of a wuss to approach the girl he claims to like. We’ve all been there and done that, right? He’s actually bearable in this episode. Heck, I found myself relating to him in the first episode – at first I thought we were real similar. No hating yet.

Episode 2 :
So he makes a few mistakes here and there. Nothing to really hate about him, it would’ve given you the impression that he was just an idiot like a lot of people at the start of a relationship, not acknowledging the feelings of the person he claims to like. He’ll learn from his mistakes, right? WRONG. However, nothing to really hate about him in this episode either.

Episode 3:
What do we have here? At the end of the episode, Makoto says that “Having Kotonoha be my girlfriend… is starting to bore me“. What the f*ck? Totally came out of nowhere. They both had a good time at her house, playing with her little sister and even started to, you know, BUILD their relationship by referring to each other by their first names. Katsura even gave him a cute peck on the cheek at the end of their date! So how the f*ck would the relationship be tiring? Does he KNOW how hard it is to find a girl like that in this world? Very easy actually, when you actually give girls the respect they deserve and don’t think with your penis; not acting like a wh*re.

Episode 4-6:
So, here’s the start of how it is revealed to the world that Makoto cares nothing about an actual relationship, but cares more about full filling his own sexual gratification. Here’s the start of the frequent camera pans toward the characters’ breasts, which obviously represents where the mindf*ck Makoto has his eyes on.

I don’t know why these girls have SUCH an interest in him. One minute, he’s stalking and obsessing over Katsura, they get together and he has a wonderful girl who begins to love him very much – the next minute he’s having underage sex with the girl who he had no interest in initially and doesn’t even care about Katsura’s feelings anymore. The only reason he’s getting it on with Sekai is because she lets him violate her body to his hearts content. Horny bastard. He’s not likable at the least – he doesn’t even TRY to break up with Katsura after he started this bullshit. To think that Katsura was going to knit a Christmas Gift for him. Merry Christmas, loser.

I’m not all that fond of Sekai anymore either (I know, she’s cute, but…) – of course it isn’t entirely her fault, but why hook someone up in a relationship that you’re going to end up ruining PURPOSELY anyway? “Special training”? @$%@%132131. If that isn’t on purpose, then this anime is filled with idiots (which, when you think about it, isn’t all that crazy). Nice to see that she actually feels guilty about this whole thing though, unlike Makoto.

This isn’t to say I won’t give Katsura a hard time either, she made the biggest mistake ever by liking the guy in the first place (same goes for Sekai and Otome), denying anything suspicious when she saw Makoto and Sekai briefly at the train station.

At this point, I’m hoping for a bad ending. With either Katsura shanking Makoto (instead of Sekai), Katsura pushing Makoto off a building (instead of her committing suicide), etc. Any bad ending that doesn’t give Makoto a good one. Or better – Makoto LIVING in sadness with NEITHER of them. Everyone wins. 😀

To put it straight, this anime doesn’t even feel like a ROMANCE anymore. The camera constantly panning in and out of the characters’ breasts and their downstairs area just screams that there isn’t any real “love”. No Makoto, you don’t ‘love” Kotonoha or Sekai you misguided fool. All you want to do is shove your **** up their ******* and have them scream “もう 止めて!! いや!!”. Stick to fapping off to your pornography.

Wow. I’ve never hated an anime character like this before. And I mean it, I’ve never felt like jumping into a show and punching out a character this badly before. Probably has something to do with a jerk being the center of a ROMANCE anime.

School Days 01

Short Summary:
A schoolboy: Makoto Itō is fascinated by Kotonoha Katsura whom rides the same train he does every morning. He manages to take a picture of her in his cellphone
without her knowing due to some belief of a love charm; taking a picture in your cellphone of someone you like, make it your wallpaper for three weeks without anyone knowing, and then, just like that, the person is yours. However, Sekai Saionji – a noisy girl – catches Makoto looking at the picture in his cellphone and knows of his secret, promising to not tell anyone and even helping him get a slight chance of a relationship with Kotonoha. After getting Makoto to actually talk to Kotonoha, Makoto gets the courage to actually ask Kotonoha out on a date. Kotonoha then realizes that the person that she had in mind, the person who she thinks constantly looks at her everyday on the train, was Makoto. Right before Makoto leaves on his date, Sekai kisses Makoto and boards the train on her way home, realizing her own feelings.
