Wahfuu Revisit! Fate/Stay Night

Fate/Stay Night

It was the best thing I had. Sue me.

You know, some people say that I’m overly optimistic about VNs that I take on, and I think that’s true. See, I always do try to find the good even in the worst of things when it comes to VNs, but sometimes I throw it under the bus really quickly if the beginning/middle/one route isn’t really that good. Yet, I’ll almost always give it a try. I don’t try to be some sort of higher intellectual that knows the intricacies behind what makes writing beautiful or what makes everything flow so well. No, I’m just a guy. A Canadian guy. And a guy who has read a damn lot of visual novels.

See, now you are probably wondering where I’m going with this! Well, when I was a wee lad, I was just getting past a lot of entry level VN stuff. Moege, random this and that shenanigans, what have you. Fate/Stay Night was one of the first super-power VNs I ever got into. And I wasn’t expecting much. Foolish, I was. Stupid. Ignorant of all the real VNs out there. I picked up Fate/Stay Night expecting nothing really at all, but holy shit. Damn. Seriously, damn.I hate using the word epic that much, but that might be the only thing that describes the visual novel. Which might be why I always give something the benefit of the doubt, because giving Fate/Stay Night the chance blew my damn mind. And it was great.

So, discovering that Fate/Stay Night had an updated patch that I was totally negligent about when I first read it, I decided to re-read the tale and share the review with you all! Fun stuff.

I can sing Fate/Stay’s pros forever, I think. Yet even things I love have imperfections. Like the fact that what makes it awesome makes all the hypothetical what-ifs and jabbering seem terribly off-putting, so sometimes you can full into a lull when all you want is to keep getting to the next twist or hardcore part. The VN gets called overrated a lot. I don’t really see it, but I can see why it wouldn’t be amazing to everybody. Especially if you’re an artfag – the game’s a bit old.

Either way, F/SN will always be one of my favorites. Not out of nostalgia, either, out of simply just sheer “holy shit” factor. It’s pretty damn good. I mean, really good. Now, you might ask what I think of the anime. I think the anime isss….. bleghk. Bad in comparison. Does a pretty good stand-alone job, but not for me and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone if they ever planned on reading the original. Fate/Zero I’m also a bit iffy on. Shoving grimdark into my face over and over doesn’t make me like it anymore, but, either way, I can understand the attraction.

So, I’ve rambled on enough. Time for the Wahfuu Review of one of my favorites, F/SN!

Anime of 2012

Sorry Haruhi, not this year

It’s time to get down to business in picking some needles out of a haystack. Overall, I’d say that this was a pretty weak year in terms of anime, but that isn’t to say there weren’t a handful of series that managed to stick out, in both a good and a bad way. This post will chronicles some of the series that managed to make some sort of impression on me this year – the good and the bad.

Based on categories ranging from most endearing to most loathed, the funniest to the unfunny, the best writing to the most obnoxious wish-fulfillment, etc. Obviously the selection’s only from the series I’ve bothered to watch, so feel free to suggest any gems that impressed you and I’ll gladly marathon them along with the rest of my backlog. I might even update this list, maybe.

Key’s Rewrite! First Thoughts and Feelings Thus Far

I've done it again.

I DO THIS TO MYSELF. I REGRET NOTHING.

PROCRASTINATION HO!

We interrupt your broadcasting of Duel Savior and Da Capo III for another visual novel to once again delay everything else I’m doing! Yes, everyone, it’s that time of the year. Where some really cool guys translate the latest Key visual novel (in record time!) and everyone is forced to go through bitch-tears and reduced masculinity for awhile. Yep, it’s that old song and dance. Rewrite has been translated. And unfortunately, everything else I’ve been doing has taken a small trip into the back-burner, because there is no way at all I can bring myself to read anything else when I have something so hyped in front of me.

So, curious? Of course you are. So this, friends and enemies alike, is the beginning of my journey into Key’s latest monstrosity! Let’s get ready to count the scars, alrighty? Okay, so, on with the show!

12 Days of Anime, Day 10: Baseball Tears

Kud says Merry Kurisimasssuuuu

Image Credit: imo mushi from Pixiv

Couldn’t get this post up yesterday because I was at a family Christmas Party (which doubled as a birthday party for my little sister, which is why I went). Strange seeing my cousins/nieces unwrapping their presents on the 23rd. 😛

Gonna get Day 11 up later today because today is technically Day 11… and I’d be bothered if I broke the flow of these and decide to end it on the 26th.

On the tenth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…

Duel Savior: Kaede (Puppies are adorable!)

PuppyPuppy

Quiet, Calm, Deadly. The Ninja, Kaede.

The dark types are such fun sometimes. The evil looks in their eyes, the dark stoic deadpan in their voice, the ungodly fear that she might just kill you before you manage to break through the evil fog of emotions. All this goes into a rather intense emotional experience as you work stone by stone, piece by piece and tear by painful tear to get to her heart, leaving you with a lot of satisfaction and manly( or womanly) tears at the end when you finally see that smile you’ve been yearning for.

So, with that in mind, let’s talk about someone completely different!

Little Busters! Perfect Edition Unboxing

Well it would seem all self-control has been lost. I’m not talking about “Rin about throwing a baseball at Masato-tier” lack of self-control, no I’m talking about the level of self-control one must lack in order to do it the way the anime showed it (launching the poor Master of Muscle several feet). Or rather, the self-control was lost a few weeks ago, November 12 to be exact. I feel like a picture is worth a thousand words, however, especially when the picture is actually just more words, but nevertheless, I present to you the following.

Wahfuu Rant: The Nukige Effect

How’s it feel knowing that people look at this and Bible Black as the same thing?

SINCE THIS RANDOMLY GOT A SURGE IN VIEWS, I FEEL LIKE I SHOULD ADD THIS POST IS REALLY OLD AND I HAVE CHANGED MY OPINION QUITE A DEAL. SO TAKE THIS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. – WAHFUU

Oh boy, have I wanted to do this one.

I’m probably going to offend someone here, and if I do, I at least slightly apologize. I just can’t much take this anymore. I really get more and more annoyed every time this seemingly stupid subject comes up whenever the topic of VNs comes up. It’s driven me to the point of madness here, and this is at least a slight release for something I’ve wanted to say for awhile.

Duel Savior: Berio! (………..)

........

The… writing of this route.

Okay… so. I must say, the beginning is a bit odd. Especially with how much sex happens almost immediately. By the by, if sex freaks you out, abandon ship. Right now. There is quite a bit of it. Way freaking earlier than I had ever expected. I think part of this can be attributed to Taiga being a mix of awesome and quite possibly the highest level of lech I have ever seen. Seriously, you thought Jun from My Girlfriend is the President was hardcore? Has got absolutely nothing on Taiga. Holy hell. Okay. Yeah. Describing what happened. Plot and stuff. Right, right.

Who is Berio? Berio is the student-president (I LOVE THOSE TYPES NOT REALLY AT ALL!) of the savior-class of the school you got freaking ported into. She’s got the whole work-hard and all-work-and-no-play thing going for her solidly. I want to blame her and not like her for how she treats Taiga at the beginning but… I can’t. He’s seriously a bastard. Almost to the point where I disliked him. Almost.  Anyways, Berio is a nun.. sort-of. She’s devoted to god at the least and helps the church a lot, so for the sake of consistency, we’ll call her the nun.

Do note that I’m trying to do route by route here so some things might be confusing. A lot of the details seem to come from Rico’s route. Anyways, onto Berio’s side of things.

Let’s Watch Little Busters! 01

We are the Little Busters!!

Mikoto Finally, the anime I’ve been waiting for, well, forever! I’ve been a bit sketchy about it not being done by KyoAni, who are pretty much the only company that has ever done VN adaptations right. But I’ve decided to give J.C. Staff the benefit of an open mind, and so I’m going into this first episode with absolutely no bias.

.

.

Mr. Lex Well, you can keep your lack of bias because J.C. Staff gives me convulsions. I don’t even know how they tricked me into trusting them and getting excited for this adaptation. If they screw it up I’m going to lose it.

.

.

Wahfuu My own excitement will kill me here, I swear. And it’s not like I can even pretend to not have a bias towards the visual novel. Look at my damn name. Either way, I have put down the torch and pitchforks and encourage everyone to do the same for now. We’ll mass the swarm later.

Ragging on Japan for no reason – not doing the research

7:19

“…What am I saying to these girls? No matter what I choose they always seem to have sex with me.”

-Gamespot

Yeah. Yeah, this guy is a moron.

Joking about Japan’s perverse media is all in good fun. That is, when it applies. When it doesn’t, you just come across as a giant bigot.

Which is exactly what this is.

Da Capo II: Scenario Reviews

Two moe sisters? Which to choose!

Two moe sisters? Oh, which to choose!

Following Wahfuu’s run of Da Capo III, finally clearing all of the scenarios in Da Capo II made a certain someone’s presence in Da Capo III a lot more understandable.

Not surprising with visual novels: whereas I found no interest in continuing the mess of an anime that Da Capo II had, I enjoyed the pacing of the visual novel and what it had to offer. Many of its strong traits include the lighthearted comedy between the characters and its heartfelt climaxes toward the end of each route. Never having read the previous installment, Da Capo, I don’t have much of a comparison between Jun’ichi/Nemu and Yoshiyuki/his “sisters” as central leads, but I found them much more likable than fan impressions of the former pair, despite Yoshiyuki not being the brightest bulb in the room.

Without further ado, let the demonic rebirth of the otherwise miraculous tree commence!

School Days: Review/Rant!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

That’s right folks! JAST has released the very infamous School Days visual novel for all the public to see! So grab your blanket and sad-faces, right? Everyone knows how this is going to go! Everyone has seen this damn anime, so naturally, the visual novel is probably going to be equally as disturbing! I bet everyone who is probably avoiding this visual novel, as if it’s been infected with the black plague, is probably wondering who in their damn right minds would play the gore-fest horror-story that is School Days.

…Except, not really.

Want to know how this went? Long story short, it went fine. No, I’m serious. It went fine. And I’m sure a ton of people reading this is going to call me a liar, but I promise! No shenanigans. Seriously. This was honestly the most anti-climactic experience I think I ever had. So, if it went fine, I bet you’re wondering what this post is about then? Well, it’s honestly half a review, half a rant. So, let’s get this started!

Visual Novels vs. Dating Simulation Games

VNs Vs. Dating Sims

A widely skewed image of the visual novel genre. and a commonly incorrect usage of the term “dating simulation,” keeps people from trying out an otherwise excellent method of storytelling.

Take the rather recent “Katawa Shoujo,” for instance. Many people went in thinking it was a “dating sim” about disabled girls. While the story is about disabled girls, it is not a dating simulation game. It’s intended to be an emotional visual novel that will break even the most wicked of souls (it’s actually rather average). Calling it a dating simulation game is as correct as calling Half-Life 2 an RPG. Or Eiken a “good anime” (ha ha). Which is why I felt like making this post, “Visual Novels vs. Dating Simulation Games.” For all you savvy folks out there, this post isn’t to put down one or the other, but to educate.

Within this post, I will post both the similarities and differences between visual novels and dating sims, and hope to take down any misconceptions about the former by forming a clear description of what the latter really is.

Little Busters! is getting an anime

WAFUUUUU

Wafu~ the anime is currently in the works according to Dengeki Bunko’s 34th episode of their web radio show. This is news I found out last night while watching Evangelion with my friends. Needless to say, I was ecstatic.

Then I wondered if Kyoto Animation was going to be behind the adaptation. Several seasons have went by with me anticipating another one of Key Visual Art’s works being translated into anime form – obviously this meant several seasons of disappointment as I love Kyoto Animation’s visual novel adaptations. Key probably loved them too considering how long it took for a popular VN like Little Busters! to have an anime announced. As a player of visual novels myself, I will say that KyoAni is one of the best when it comes to doing a VN anime right.

But not to my surprise, Kyoto Animation is not in charge of the Little Busters! anime whatsoever. I guess several seasons of disappointment turned out to be a good shock absorber.

Let’s hope that the studio (currently unknown) that’s in charge of the Little Busters! anime knows what it’s doing and will create a good anime out of it. While I’m disappointed that it didn’t end up being in the hands of the studio I have 100% faith in when it comes to visual novel adaptations, what matters the most is that the studio it is in the hands of knows what it’s doing. Preferably not J.C.Staff or Toei.

A batch of Clannad tributes

Dango Daikazoku forever!

Just a few tributes to possibly one of the saddest visual novel stories ever told, in the form of full opening music videos. I hope you enjoy!

(This reminds me, I can’t wait for the translation of Key’s new visual novel Rewrite. Almost time for another round of emotional torture!)

I’ll be at Fanime 2012

Me on Yume's route

I apologize for not posting much since the middle of last year and AT ALL this year. I’ve been caught up in college. It’s obvious where I’d place priorities, right? And I’ve been playing more visual novels and reading manga than watching anime during my free time, along with hanging out with people at places that enriches my stomach. Da Capo II and Little Busters for the win! Hard to write about anime when you’re not watching at the same pace as everyone else right?

Starting on May 25, I’ll be going to the 2012 Fanime convention taking place at San Jose’s convention center, which conveniently coincides with the same day I take a summer break from college. I’m expecting to get a good experience from the convention. To atone for my borderline abandonment of this blog, I’ll post pictures and a write-up of my experiences at this year’s Fanime by mooching off any photos my friends take with their cameras.

One thing I’m expecting to see? THE POKEMEN!

Until they get kicked out.
